Newborn formula and breast?

My LO is 18 days old. While in hospital after having her I breastfed but after coming home due to having a section I found it too difficult so ended up changing to formula so husband could help. Also baby was constantly hungry and didn’t seem satisfied with breast.

We’ve been just formula feeding since around day 3 but I still seem to have a good breast milk supply and baby still wants to latch. She’s drinking around 4oz formula every 2-3 hours and is sometimes wanting more in between.

Is it okay for me to breastfeed her in between formula bottles if she latches and is happy?

Yes it’s fine it’s called combination feeding. There’s support groups for it on FB. I had to do it with my first. Good luck!

Absolutely, if you want to keep offering it then do so. Plenty of people combination feed their babies.

The fussiness is normal and it's the baby's way of getting your breasts to establish their longer term supply. It's not that you 'don't have enough milk', it's how the baby tells your body you'll be needing more in the future.

Definitely! Best of both worlds. Congrats on your baby!

I deliberately did combination feeding while a friend of mine was advised to do it due to medical reasons.

Regardless how you feed make sure you feed on demand as babies stomaches are small.

Just be aware that at random points of time your baby will become "fussy" again this will be to increase your supply and is normally followed by a growth spurt.

Also don't worry if baby cluster feeds e.g. wants to be fed 30 minutes after feeding regardless of whether they had a bottle or breast. Cluster feeding is normal..

Of course! I did combination feeding because DS took days to finically latch, it worked well for us.

Yes, it's definitely OK. There is a book about mixed feeding called Mixed Up which might be usefuk to read?

You cannot overfeed a baby with breastfeeding. If she has her formula (which can overfeed) and wants breastmilk too, by all means give her some! She'll stop when she's full.

absolutely! Like @AnneLovesGilbert says- best of both worlds! X
