Do babies ever skip crawling AND cruising?

Our baby doesn’t pull to stand, doesn’t cruise, doesn’t crawl, doesn’t bum shuffle, but does ‘ask’ us to stand him up all day long and walks confidently holding our hands. He really motors along quite quickly and this seems to be all he wants to go. Sometimes we leave him to ‘figure it out’ if we know he wants to stand up and is gesturing to us, but we don’t like to let him get too upset so we do reliant and stand him up. He seems to have very strong legs, it’s just his balance is not great.

i imagine most likely he’ll eventually crawl or cruise, but I just wondered if anyone has ever had a baby that went straight to walking?

i should also say - he’s just turned 9 months and has been doing this since 7 months. He used to need much more support from us and only did a few steps. He’s never been a fan of tummy time and still doesn’t ever want to be on his belly.

My eldest never crawled much. He wanted to stand all the time and was cruising the furniture and walking very shakily before he was 9 months old. Always covered in bruises because he kept falling over, but he didn't seem to mind!

Cafeaulait27 · 23/07/2022 14:47

typo in my first post *relent not reliant

My eldest didn't crawl or cruise and did the same wanting to walk holding hands, she walked at 13 months though so it was a tiring back breaking few months of this I'm sorry to say!

illiterato · 26/07/2022 00:48

DS didnt crawl or stand but bum shuffled at speed. Was referred to physio at 12 months (not UK- they panic here if they're not walking by 12mo). She basically said he just hasn't worked out how to move his limbs to pull up. She then basically moved his legs for him a few times and then his brain got the hang of it and he started pulling up, so could try that. He never crawled which did mean he was late to climb as it's essentially the same movement but that might not be a bad thing.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 26/07/2022 00:50

My eldest skipped crawling and cruising. She used to stand in the middle of the room.

Just as a heads up; It was something they asked about when she was assessed for Asperger’s, but of course there isn’t always a connection to neurodiversity.

Don’t worry about it if it’s a single quirk.

toomuchlaundry · 26/07/2022 00:53

Supposedly I just sat on my bottom pointing at things I wanted until nearly two and then got up and walked! I think I had a very willing older brother to fetch things for me.

DS was slightly earlier than me at walking, crawled but didn’t really cruise. Again one day he just got up and walked. DH on the other hand was walking at 8 months

MolliciousIntent · 26/07/2022 08:38

It's developmentally very important that they learn to crawl, something to do with neural pathways. There are lots of good paed physio insta accounts with tips and tricks to encourage crawling.

Shudacudawuda · 26/07/2022 08:46

Yes, my DS didn't move across a space until he walked at 13 months - no cruising, no crawling, no rolling, nothing!
Apparently my husband was the same according to my MIL, the only reason I didn't worry about it.
My DD in contrast was a champion crawler, but didn't walk until she was 15 months.

Cafeaulait27 · 26/07/2022 08:56

@Shudacudawuda that is very interesting! He also doesn’t roll anymore. He did it for about a week or so when he first learnt it at 4-5 months, but after that it’s like he just knew he wasn’t bothered anymore. He only rolls now if I’ve put him on his tummy cos he hates it. He rolls onto his side in bed to sleep but that’s about it.

@MolliciousIntent that’s actually not true. Many babies do not crawl. That theory has been debunked a long time ago, if you have a Google you will see.

@toomuchlaundry oh wow! Yeah he seems to have learnt he can communicate with us to stand him up, fetch things etc and that’s easier than learning to do it himself!

@Wallawallakoala Im kind of hoping for this, hopefully sooner than a few months though!

he has a HV check coming up, so I will see what they say at that. He’s definitely keen to move, But he’s not going about it in the classic crawling, pulling up, cruising etc way…

My eldest bum shuffled (at great speed) and never cruised or crawled.

She was late walking, but when she did....she walked. She didn't stumble or fall. She just walked. From nothing, to confidently walking across gardens/the house/ to the shop.

Turns out it's a trait of hers, she won't do ANYTHING until she knows she's mastered it.

We have improved this, and now she's a teen its head first into everything. But the first 10 years were ... Frustrating. Riding a bike/swimming/anything involving coordination, not until she was ready to do it proficiently would she do it.

Soubriquet · 26/07/2022 09:14

My dd did. She bum shuffled but never learned to crawl or cruise.

Then on the day she turned 18 months, she got up and walked across the room. Never stopped after that

greenerfingers · 26/07/2022 19:01

Mine rolled twice and I mean twice ever. And then did nothing till 12 months. Hv said just wait it out. One day at 12 months he just walked a week after his birthday. I couldn't believe it. He started crawling after he walked but would occasionally do it to get something from under tables etc. It was really worrying for me that he also wouldn't roll. He's 3 now and is as physically active as any 3 year old.

GoAround · 26/07/2022 19:06

My eldest didn’t crawl, didn’t cruise, would only really roll to get comfy in bed, loved walking holding hands, she did pull to stand a little bit but barely, then she was off walking on her own at 9 months. My second did everything the normal way!

Terrytoweltampon · 26/07/2022 19:08

At 9 months neither of mine showed any interest in any kind of movement. Crawling at 12 months and walking by 18 months.

ivykaty44 · 26/07/2022 19:11

It's developmentally very important that they learn to crawl,

whats the outcome if they miss this stage?

my dd2 didn't ever crawl

chilliesandspices · 26/07/2022 19:12

I didn't. I went from demanding to be picked up all the time to being caught walking unaided across a room at 18 months. Apparently I was a bit of a Princess.

CheshireCat1 · 26/07/2022 19:14

All my three never crawled just walked between 9 and 10 months.

womaninatightspot · 26/07/2022 19:15

My eldest failed to crawl. Walked just before he was one and was always really steady. Completely skipped toddling. Always had a really good sense of balance.

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 26/07/2022 19:18

My son bum shuffled at good speed and could wobble walk at 13 months however because he could get there faster on his bum he walked at independently at 18 months and 3 weeks. Then he crawled

Thinkbiglittleone · 26/07/2022 19:19

Our DS never crawled, just walked at 10 months.

tokyotea · 26/07/2022 19:20

Mine totally slipped crawling and like yours, was so eager to walk. We held his hands and he would take steps etc. he did love to cruise too though. It started at 7 months for him too, and by 10 months he took his first shaky steps alone. Walked confidently by 11 months. No developmental problems at all. I know there's 'research' to say there is but we haven't noticed anything. He's 2 now. He just always had really strong legs and loved to walk! He walks a lot now too. Hard to get him in the pram Smile

kkneat · 26/07/2022 19:21

My oldest didn’t crawl, cruise, pull up, roll over( did sit up at 6 months though). Walked with a lot of encouragement at 17 months, was diagnosed with HFA at 13
my second crawled and walked at 12 months
third didn’t crawl, bum shuffled and walked at 13 months

an optometrist told me crawling is very important to develop good peripheral vision don’t know if that’s true

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 26/07/2022 23:12

In your first post, change him to her and I could have written it word for word.

My Dd is 8 months, she's been insisting on being on her feet since before 12 weeks - confident walker (with hands held), won't pull herself up (she'll pull herself on me, but nothing else). Its only this last week she's insisting on lying on her belly.

I was one of those babies who didn't crawl...we expect DD to be the same.

Goodnewsday · 26/07/2022 23:19

What about a push trolley? I put my little boy up at a play table thing a lot and that seemed to really strengthen his legs enough that he randomly pulled to stand at 10 months one day, still waiting on him walking at nearly a year
