Is my 18MO eating the right amount or too much?

My 18mo is a happy and healthy little girl, she is tall for her age.
I feel like she doesn't stop eating though and generally when she asks for food I give it to her because I hate the thought of her being hungry and think maybe as she's growing she's just needing plenty of food.

Today she's had;

Breakfast: Porridge (eats the whole bowlful)

Snacks: Banana & Pack of raisins

Lunch: 3 falafel, babybel, a few carrots sticks, cherry tomato & 4 raspberries

Snacks: mango and another pack of raisins

She will then have dinner and milk this evening.

Having written this down I'm beginning to think maybe it's a growth spurt but it feels like she's spent all day eating!
I'd be interested to hear what your 18MO eats.

So 3 healthy meals and two healthy snacks.......and you think this might be too much why?

MolliciousIntent · 22/07/2022 15:32

Sounds fine to me. I'd just be careful with the raisins, they have a LOT of sugar in them and are particularly bad for teeth (top tip from my dentist friend).

Imaginary · 22/07/2022 15:35

It does not sound like she's eating that much.
A healthy toddler will eat as much as she needs, so no reason to worry about it.

Mine was a gannet. And is a tall, slim 11 yo now.

I'd ditch the raisins but it's all good. Protein/fat snack like cheese?

popcorndiva · 22/07/2022 15:38

Yep seems fine I just wouldn't give 2 packs of raisins a day.

Thanks all I'll cut back on the raisins!

I'd ditch the raisins and cut an apple up for her instead or cucumber sticks. Sounds all good to me. The main thing is she is not loading up on junk like crisps and biscuits.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 22/07/2022 15:56

Today My 16month old has had

2 weetabix with banana followed by a slice of toast and peanut butter. A drink of cows milk
an Ella’s fruit pouch thing
cheese sandwich a few baby crisps a baby bel an orange and some melon
bread sticks and houmous.

for dinner she’ll have risotto followed by a yogurt and possibly a few cut up grapes.
More cows milk before bed

So I think your little one sounds fine.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 22/07/2022 15:57

Well you'll need to replace the raisins with something, things like mango and 4 raspberries are very insignificant and not at all filling-more protein as suggested above?

luxxlisbon · 22/07/2022 16:38

I mean obviously for most of this we don’t have quantities but if we are assuming a normal bowl of porridge etc this doesn’t sound like an excessive amount of food. Seems odd to even count 4 raspberries imo!

AfterGlow87 · 22/07/2022 20:33

It sounds like a nice normal amount to me! My 14 month old eats more than that some days 🙈

I’m constantly worried about the amounts even though I’m quite strict about sweet things but I figure he needs it as he’s growing so much. He loves all food which I’m grateful for!

ANewNameANewDay · 22/07/2022 20:34

What's the memo for raisins? Feel like I've missed something...

Full of sugar, stick to teeth. Like so many things, they're fine every once in a while. But they are basically sweets.

squarky · 22/07/2022 21:48

To be honest the fact she had a 2nd pack today was a bit of an anomaly because we were out at the time and it was all I had on me to give to her. But she does have one pack a day though, I'd better ration these out further!

i don't think i've ever heard of raisins rotting toddler's teeth but okay anyway it sounds like she's doing well especially if she's tall

johnd2 · 22/07/2022 22:33

How is her weight gain and growth (and activity levels)
If she is gaining weight along the same centile, growing ok, and good activity levels, then just trust her to regulate her hungr. It's a useful skill as an adult!
We spent a long time worrying about our son not eating the same as others (he tends to skip/refuse meals and then stuff himself at the next meal) but in the end he's staying around his correct centile so we eventually relaxed a bit! Easy to say but it can get worrying.
My mantra now is I decide what to offer ( eg what types of food) and he decides whether and how much to eat. It takes some of the stress out of it. Only some of the stress !
Good luck.

SzechuanSally · 23/07/2022 12:49

It looks like a good enough diet but perhaps more at lunchtime is needed? Carrot sticks, cherry toms and 4 raspberries all great but not very filling maybe - although I know she had falafel too.

Mine is 19 months and roughly eats the following each day:

Cup of milk on awakening.
Breakfast:Porridge with raspberries (and a few white choc chunks melted in) possibly 1/2 a banana too. Or toast and banana.

Lunch: Cheese on toast/homemade cheesy spinach crepe/pasta with Tom sauce veg and cheese/fish pie with veg.
Big handful of blueberries and a yoghurt.

Snack: scone or something like an organix flapjack bar. Plus shares an apple with me.

Dinner: chicken with cheesy mash and veg.
More fruit -strawberries/rasps/blueberries. Ella's K pudding pot.
Cup of milk before bed.

He is over 95th percentile for height and weight and looks quite tall and lean.

Well they are 50 percent sugar so obviously they’re not going to be great for your teeth.
