CMPA?

Hi, my LO is 4 weeks old and from around 2 weeks she has been having constipation which has now turned into yellow diarrhoea with mucus, she has a red ring around her bum and is generally really unsettled for a good period after feeding (she is formula fed) with inconsolable crying. She brings her legs up to her chest, sneezes a lot! I have taken her to the GP who have said it's silent reflux and prescribed infant gaviscon which seems to be making things worse! The GP seems to think it's not CMPA and I feel he is fobbing me off and not taking into account the mucus in her poo. Anyone else had issues with getting a diagnosis? How long did it take?

Infant gaviscon causes constipation so I would stop that now. I would speak to the GP again and say strongly suspect CMPA and want to trial dairy free formula.

My LO has cmpa. Like you I fought for nearly 8 weeks and got fobbed off by several GPs saying it was reflux, baby acne, colic etc.
At his 8 week checkup the Dr was quite taken aback at how unsettled he was and how LOUD he was and said maybe it is cmpa. It basically took one Dr to agree with me and we were put on the right track straight away.
He does still have some reflux that is controlled by omeprazole (much better than gaviscon which my baby was put on at ten days old, in every feed until he was 4 months old and when the constipation got so bad from it I knew we has to stop) but once he was put on neocate formula at 3 months (after a stint on Nutramigen) his reflux was much better and we hope to wean him off the omeprazole when he starts weaning.
He never had blood in his poo, always put on weight but that doesn’t mean it’s not cmpa.

In fact we had to do the milk challenge a month ago and after just 4 days in which the first bottle of the day had to have standard formula in, that increased as the days went on, he was awful. Whimpering, so unsettled and even though he was previously very constipated from gaviscon, a full bottle of cows formula made him do the wettest explosive poo ever and that fully confirmed it for us.
I would first push your doctor for omeprazole over gaviscon and if that doesn’t help then a formula suitable for cmpa.

It's so frustrating and the HV can't understand why they prescribed gaviscon! She also said that they don't have the knowledge on it and are having to undergo some training so they are more aware! I spoke to one GP who basically told me I was being paranoid and it wasn't that and prescribed something called carobel which I haven't given her as she has no issue keeping milk down! Hopefully they will try her on different formula after her next appt.

Sounds like CMPA to me too. It’s better to try to sort it soon as the amino acid formula (for more severe allergies) tastes gross but your baby will be fine with it while they’re young, but will get fussier when they get older. Good luck.

4.5 months with dc1 I was patronised by every Hv and gp up until that point. 48 hours after being dairy free I had a different baby, went from crying 20 hours a day to never crying unless I slept through the cooing.

dc2 I marched up to the gp at 8 weeks and demanded a trial of cmpa formula and was prepared for the fight. Which wasn't needed as they were happy to give me 2 week trail as dc2 wasn't gaining weight appropriately which dc1 never had a problem with

DD has silent reflux and had the same symptoms you describe.
She also has CMPA. The two can go hand in hand unfortunately.
Best advice I can offer is go back to your GP and request a referral to a paediatrician.

When we first went to the GP they gave us prescription formula straight away.
It didnt help so we saw an oit of hours GP who gave us Gaviscon which helped a bit but when she hit 8 weeks old it was unbearable and we asked for a paediatric referral.
They gave us Omeprazole and it was an absolute game changer.
Months down the line she is still on a combination of prescription formula, Gavuscon and Omeprazole and doing really well.

Went to the GP yesterday and they have put her on a 2 week trial of aptamil pepti, didn't even have to argue! They had taken a stool sample which had come back saying they suspect CMPI - I think maybe there might have been blood in the stool! She's been on it less than 24 hours and already have noticed a small difference so fingers crossed
