School uniform-first timer

I didn’t wear a school uniform when I was a child so I could do with a bit of guidance😊 my ds is starting in reception and in nursery he’d alway wear a clean set of clothes every day so I’d get 5 pair of grey pull up trousers and perhaps 2 pair of grey shorts. School sweatshirt is navy with green embroidery logo and there is a choice between white and navy polo shirts again with logo or can by plain sweatshirt and polos from supermarkets. Do I get both navy and white polos? How many would you get with school logo? Maybe a weird question but do he socks need to be plain as well? Which supermarket do you prefer to get school uniform from? TIA xx

If I had the choice, I would go for navy shirts. White shirts get filthy so quickly - especially in Reception!

Our socks have to be plain.
I've never bothered with logo shirts/jumpers - too expensive!

Sainsburys often have a 25% off sale at some point in the summer hols if you can hold your nerve and try to buy then, its good quality as well.

At that age assuming you only want to wash it at the weekend I would go for 5 trousers, 2 shorts, 2 plain jumpers, 1 logo jumper (for photo day) 5 plain navy polo shirts (white will just get strained) At primary I dont think they are overly bothered about the colour of the socks.

Don’t bother with the white shirts if you have the choice - whatever the washing ads claim you’ll never get them white again!

My DC’s school specifies plain black socks but he wears any colour socks and they never complain.

If you’re allowed shirts/jumpers without the logo go for plain - they will be much cheaper.

I like Sainsbury's uniform as their proportions fit my DC and they’ve always washed and lasted well.

Btw after reception I started buying whatever DC needs as he grows/wears stuff out throughout the year, rather than everything in the summer holidays. It spreads the cost out and supermarkets usually have stuff in stock throughout the year, especially online, so don’t be sucked into the advertising pressure to buy everything in the summer holidays.

As others have said don't buy white shirts they never stay white. My boys wear bottle green and they're brilliant for hiding the dirt! I only buy two pair of trousers and 3 polo shirts I think they've got two sweatshirts each too. I generally only wash the uniform once a week unless it's obviously dirty. I try to just wipe off what dirt/school dinner I can! My feeling is it's going to get dirty again anyway so they don't need clean stuff everyday.

I get logo sweatshirts usually 3. Then 4/5 dark blue polos no logos . And 5 pairs trousers (still has odd accidents) plain black socks. Has pe been mentioned?

Sakura03 · 20/07/2022 22:20

Thank you everyone, really helpful, I'll go for only navy shirts then. autienotnaughty yes good point I forgot about pe... I think they said house colour t-shirt (his is green) and navy shorts, a tracksuit and indoor trainers for when the weather is bad.

Little tip - supermarket school uniform comes up small in my experience with very very marginal sizes between the ages. My LO is always in age appropriate clothes but school uniform is sometimes two years older than age. Also they may require a spare set for school peg in case of acceidents (including food / paint spills)

Sakura03 · 21/07/2022 08:39

Smogtopia thanks I'll keep that in mind, you're right I forgot that they've asked for a spare set although my ds never uses the spare set in his nursery bag but will get it anyway just on case

The good thing with white shirts is they are always available. Any uniform that’s a bit different might be available now, but after the start of term can be more trick to get. But this won’t matter if you need extra and can switch to white anyway.

Rainallnight · 21/07/2022 08:49

I got five of everything including sweatshirts. They get filthy

SurreyMumOfOne · 21/07/2022 08:55

I'm in the same boat - but with compulsory white polos! A couple of things I've picked up from talking to people:

-M&S and Sainsbury's have already had their uniform sales ☹️
-M&S trousers have hems which can easily be let down to make them longer

  • BUT chances are DC will have worn the trousers out before they grow out of them
  • Sainsbury's have trousers with reinforced knees which are meant to be great, but unfortunately they only come in regular fit which look incredibly baggy on my DS and they are quite short
