Do warm or cool babies sleep better?

Just basically that

I know the general rules, and guidelines around what to dress them in for temperatures at night...see attached pic.

However...had my 9MO in a vest only last x2 nights as baby monitor was reading 27 degrees (that was with window open) and he slept terribly which is unlike him. Fussy, hard to settle, not at all sweaty or hot.. ended up putting him in a wee sleeping bag because he had his arms and legs all tucked in like a bug (I think he was cold!) and he went over.

No idea what the actual temp in the room is either because I've two thermometers one (egg thing) that reads 22 and the monitor 27 🙄🙄🙄 So using my common sense tonight 😂

So I've dressed him like normal (vest babygrow and light sleeping bag) tonight as his room isn't overly warm and it's 16 degrees outside (in Northern Ireland so not getting the same heatwave as other parts of UK)

Just wondering if others find the guidelines are a load of bollocks? They seem a bit OTT? and do you find babies like to be a bit warmer to sleep in? Even though guidelines are always rattling on about 16-20 degrees being best? Is that just to ward off carelessness or stupidity like hats and gloves on little babies at night?

I agree with you. Our 9 month old twins were grouchy and cold even though their room showing 29° and a fan on in just their vests. Took vests off and put 1tog grobag on and out like a light and back to sleeping through.

Each baby is so different and only you know what is right for yours !

I'm not sure it's always to do with being cold but the fact they are used to the sleeping bag or whatever. My daughter (5m) always struggles to settle without her sleepsuit on- she isn't cold but just doesn't seem to like the feeling of not having it

I should point out she doesn't wear a sleeping bag as she seemed to find the 0-6m too restrictive from about 4m and isn't big enough for the next size up yet

I can't sleep without a blanket no matter how hot I am, always need something on my torso at least. I find it's the same for kids.

My toddler often sleeps without the blanket but always starts the night huddled under it.
Newborn needs something on his too. Last night it was my hand on his tummy all night! Thank goodness for side cots!

I wouldn't say the guidelines are bollocks. I also wouldn't say he was cold last night more likely too hot then got over tired! If you believe he needs a sleeping bag for comfort you can buy a sheet one for hot weather, but please don't ignore the guidelines they are there for a reason.

Mine has been in just a nappy last 2 nights! Tried putting a blanket on her & just cried until she kicked it off & then settled.
Groegg was reading 27-28.

Think she runs hot like her daddy as she's been feeling warm all the time.

Monitors are notoriously inaccurate for temperature readings, cameras heat up while in use and the thermometer attached to the camera will be picking up the heat generated from the camera as well as the room temperature. If it was 22° in the room and he was just in a vest and no sleeping bag then he probably was too cold to sleep.

It's good to use the room temperature as a guide but I would always take "real feel" in to account too.

I don’t know about babies but I was just saying this to my OH last night that I much prefer a heavier duvet as I sleep better that way, if I sleep with a light blanket over me I can’t get “cosy” and just feel exposed if that makes sense. Could be the same for a baby?

scoobycute · 21/07/2022 10:17

So he slept like a log last night 🥳 he was definitely too cold past 2 nights.

@shivawn yes 100%! I discovered this after feeling the camera and it was warm!

@scoobycute It's annoying they even include/advertise it as a feature when it's so inaccurate

Babies are people and just as variable as any other age category of people.

My DS1 would (and will) sleep anywhere. In any situation. My DS2 and DS3 are entirely different. Both need to be the correct temperature to sleep. DS2 has a pretty narrow range of acceptable sleeping temperatures. DS3 needs to be pretty warm to sleep. It took me ages when he was a baby to recognise that part of his sleep issues was that the temperature guidelines were just far too cold for him to sleep.

Tbh, many of the safer sleep guidance is really a set of things that are correlated with being less conducive to sleep for many babies. Being a bit cold. Uncomfortable mattress. Etc. The risks associated with sleep are reduced if they aren’t sleeping!

27 is very hot for Northern Ireland. I'd be inclined to believe the other thermometre and follow the guidelines based on that.

We have 2 therms as well, and the monitor is a bit less accurate than the mercury one. When it was in our room on our fabric headrest it was always 2 degrees hotter than the other. Now he's in his own room it seems accurate most of the time

MsSquiz · 21/07/2022 19:36

My 12 week old won't sleep without her sleeping bag or swaddled in a muslin so we got a 0.2 tog sleeping bag for her & she only had a nappy underneath it for the past few nights.
I think it's the sleeping bag stopping her arms flailing about that helps rather than the warmth because she wouldn't sleep great in a sleepsuit but no bag
