Pompholyx/Dyshidrotic Eczema - baby!

Does anyone have any experience of this? My 14mo seems to have this on his feet. I’ve noticed it before a few times, mildly and it came and went. He seems to have flair ups every so often and it’s always baffled me, wondering what it was! I sent pics to the GP who also said they had no idea. It was me who stumbled across it online and suggested it to her, she seems to agree that’s what it must be.

Hes got them all over his wee feet at the moment and some on his hands too. They look so itchy but he doesn’t seem to be too bothered by them? Fingers crossed!! Will attach a pic.

Im just wondering if anyone has any experience of this and can offer any advice on how to help? I have no idea what’s causing the flair ups, could it be heat/sweat or a particular soap or something? He used to be dairy free but his symptoms for this tended to be digestive rather than linked to his skin. He now has dairy in limited amounts fine.

Thanks in advance for any help!

xx

I get this between my fingers and on my palms/wrists (and sometimes feet too). With me it's usually heat related. If it's not bothering him and just comes and goes I wouldn't worry too much. Just dont pop the little bubbles! I'm guilty of this and then it gets very itchy and weepy. If it does start bothering him I expect a mild steroid cream would clear it up. I use that as a last resort as I've had lifelong eczema, but it does work!

I get this on my hands.

Try and keep his feet as dry as possible and when they get wet, be meticulous at drying them off.

Has he been wearing shoes with no socks on?

Mine is triggered by chlorine, washing up that type of thing. You could try some 0.5% hydrocortisone cream.

I get this from soap or Fairy liquid. Bars of soap don't irritate. Once it flares up I need to use a steroid cream to get rid of it. It's maddengly itchy. I have to be very careful with what soaps I use.

Thank you all so much.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor So sorry to hear it’s itchy for you, I hate the thought of him being irritated and itchy with it! 🙈 thanks for your help.

@Allthecoloursoftherainbow It could very well be heat related too, as we have the heatwave at the moment and he’s a lot warmer and sweatier than normal! I try not to touch his feet much as I don’t want to start irritating him or popping anything. What a bizarre thing!!!! Thanks for the advice.

@MissisBoote no shoes without socks, but lots of time in the garden and in water etc with the hotter weather! Very strange thing and so hard to pinpoint a trigger. Thanks for your advice.

I get this on my fingers usually in summer. Very itchy. And weirdly I get it just on one foot! If I have a bad flare up I use a steroid cream but unsure what to use for babies. Hope he's ok.

AuntieMaggie · 18/07/2022 19:09

I get this on my hands - suncream, liquid soap, washing up liquid triggers it. It's been particularly bad with the hot weather because of putting suncream on DCs.

I use eumovate ointment when it flares up but maybe you could see a pharmacist and ask about hydrocortisone or alternative?

What has he been walking on in the garden? Is there anything in the water he's been playing with? Is there anything you apply to his hands and feet like soap/moisturiser?

showgirl63 · 18/07/2022 19:29

I get this and for me it's heat related so I normally get spring time but if we go on a winter beach holiday I always get an outbreak so it seems to be when I go from cold to hot.

Very itchy but I second leave the blisters alone!

ToThineOwnSelfBe · 18/07/2022 19:46

I get this from soap too, though the GP who diagnosed me said it's very common in people who work on tills as the metals in coins can often trigger it too. I get on the sides of my fingers and feet and it's incredibly itchy and worse so if any of the blisters open.

I cut soap out completely, which was complicated then but is easier now. DC1 (10) had terrible eczema from 6 months till about 2 years and the only thing that worked for him was cutting out soap and using hydrocortisone to get it under control when it flared up really badly. Not meant to use hydrocortisone long term though as it thins the skin if used over long periods of time.

I get this on my hands. Keep dry and try not to pop the spots.

I cut out hand soap and I also get it from contact with certain vegetables.

I get little itchy blisters like this on the palms on my hands , but only when I’m ill with something else. Last year I had a virus and got it, and this year I had Covid and got it. The blisters are really itchy, then they burst and then the skin peels off. It makes my palms feel really rough and a bit weird. I know this is no help, but I’ve never come across anyone else who gets it 😁.

RockAndRollerskate · 18/07/2022 20:49

My little ones eczema is often triggered by grass - have they been out barefoot?

mummy1202 · 18/07/2022 22:37

Thanks so much everyone ❤️

Not very pleasant for anyone by the sounds of it, I’m hoping it isn’t too itchy for him as he is his usual happy self but would like to help as much as I can.

I am thinking that it could be heat, Suncream, grass, a different soap or a combination of the above! So hard to pinpoint and eliminate a cause and very hard to stop if it is heat etc that is the cause as there’s not much I can do. The GP did prescribe us a steroid cream but I find it hard as he has been known to put his feet in his mouth etc so I was wary of applying it often due to this. I might try applying at night before his feet get snuggled away inside his sleep suit.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with it -
it’s a completely new one for me!!
