Croup and upcoming holiday. Will we have to cancel?!

We are due to go on holiday in a week. Over the weekend we went to A&E with our 4 year old and they were treated with steroids for suspected croup. LO is a perkier today but very tired, no more temp, but still noisy breathing and an occasional nasty cough that seems to hurt. Currently waiting on a call back from GP to see if he needs more treatment.

How quickly do kids bounce back from croup? Are we likely to be able to go away next week or does it linger for ages? If it’s relevant, we’re flying and it will be low-mid 20s weather wise.

My 3yo has had croup several times, it doesn't usually last more than 3 nights. Your child might also have Covid though, did he/she get a test?

The hospital didn’t test or even ask! We’ve done a lateral flow that was negative but testing him is a nightmare so not sure how accurate it is. DH and I are both negative.

It didn't last too long with mine and he needed steroids too - you should hopefully be fine

Hi
DC is a veteran of croup.
We were given 3 days of steroids and by day 2 itseems to clear it completely.

use the inhaler as well and keep dc well hydrated

Thanks everyone! GP wants us in layer to check his chest and said she’d likely give another dose of steroids. Fingers crossed the lateral flows stay negative and we’re on that plane!

Yeah agree. Baby prone to it, two nights usually. A week should be fine

Croup at it's worst doesn't last more than a couple of nights usually. My oldest has had it several times including needing an ambulance once and needing to be taken to hospital other times (she had lots if breathing issues as a toddler). My youngest had a case of it too. Have you been given a ventolin inhaler? Having that for my oldest avoided needing hospital treatment for some illnesses.
