Cradle cap coconut sorcery

Maybe everyone knew this but me, but if your DC has cradle cap, massage coconut oil, leave for 10 minutes, brush and rinse. This is magic!!

I've been using cradle cap shampoo every time religiously for both my DC. My 4 year old still had small patches and my 10 months old was getting so bad it smelt quite pungent in the heat!
Minutes after I put coconut oil this evening it all just magically lifted from the scalp. It was amazing! As well as totally gross and satisfying in equal measures.

If you've been considering it, do it!

Ooh interesting. What sort of a brush do you use?

My 2 year old still has it 😳

weathervane1 · 17/07/2022 22:10

Works just as well with a light olive oil. Any oil that mixes with the oil in cradle cap will work fine.

Oooh I’m going to try this tomo on baby boy 🤣 How was it washing out the coconut oil? I think I tried it once as a fad hair treatment and remember it just being greasy!! X

Omg my twins and eldest DC all got this, and one of the twins has had a recurrence, aged 5 ! I'm trying this tomorrow ! Thankyou !

CradleWin · 17/07/2022 22:34

Oh I'm so glad it could help! I thought everyone would say "well duh! Why haven't you done this before". I'd known about it for ages but not tried as I thought if the proper shampoo couldn't shift it, the chances were remote this would work. I was so excited I called DH so he could see and he was just grossed out by all the bits coming out and walked away!

So I used a soft baby hairbrush (from mothercare 5 years ago) so I could sort of rub it in and it wouldn't hurt.

Yes it does make the hair quite greasy, possibly not helped by the fact the bathwater wasn't very warm at all when I washed it off. It's OK on the 4 year old, but I'll probably wash the 10 months old again in the morning. I was very generous with the oil though and sort of pouring it on! You definitely don't need to use that much.

Also I washed the hair as normal first before starting this process. Not sure if it makes a difference and you could just do it on dry unwashed hair, but I just followed what I read online!

Enjoy!

I found exactly the same result using the standard Head and Shoulders. I wrapped DD up in a towel so that I could control the shampoo and stop it going in her eyes. The cradle cap lifted off almost straight away. I was amazed and it never came back.

Babyccino11 · 17/07/2022 22:57

Did it take much hair away with it when it lifted off? Mine has quite thick cradle cap still at age 2, I can lift it off but it takes the hair with it, worried if I try the coconut oil he’ll have no hair left on top?!

CradleWin · 17/07/2022 23:06

@Babyccino11 I worried about this too, when I picked at their cradle cap before with my fingers, all the hair would come out with it.

But that didn't seem to really happen with this method. The brush was full of the greasy cradle cap, but not much hair came with it.

I think its because if you remove it when it's dry the hair is encased with the crusty cradle cap and comes out with it, but as this method softens the cradle cap it doesn't happen so much.

Not an expert though, just my experience!

It works a miracle for nappy rash too. My poor dd2 when she was a baby had terrible nappy rash, I went from pharmacy to pharmacy literally begging for help but I'd tried every medication available. For some reason, probably out of desperation, I ended up in Holland and Barratt and the lovely lady advised I tried coconut oil and said "but don't buy it here, the one in Aldi is cheaper and does the same job". It really was like witnessing a miracle, nappy change went straight away from screaming in agony to smiling and cooing and it healed within 2 days, I'll remember that as long as I live 😀

CradleWin · 17/07/2022 23:08

Also so surprised to see so many with this problem with toddlers, i thought we were the only ones! I had this misconception before I had DC that only newborn babies had it!

Thankyou, I’m going to give it a go!

GreyGoose1980 · 23/07/2022 15:41

How long do you leave the coconut oil in for? Is it best to put it on dry or wet hair? Do you wash it off with shampoo or just water?
Thanks

CradleWin · 23/07/2022 19:49

It worked in about 5 minutes but I left it on longer while I brushed all the cradle cap away. I did it on wet hair and used shampoo to rinse. In fact I shampooed a couple of times to get all the grease off (coconut oil grease and cradle cap grease!); .

Have to say, the thing that finally cleared DDs scalp was the Hedrin treatment I used on her hair when she caught head lice at nursery. 😂

stormelf · 23/07/2022 19:59

This is what I've always done with my children. It's amazing how quick it works

GranolaHolmes · 23/07/2022 20:03

I leave an oil on for a while then comb through the scalp with a nitty gritty comb. Absolutely revolting but the cradle cap lifts off easily. Wipe the comb with a tissue and keeping going over the scalp gently. Then a good shampoo and rinse does the job.

May only work with older children who are willing to tolerate the comb though.

GreyGoose1980 · 23/07/2022 22:45

Thanks all - DD has cradle cap so I’ll be trying this.

Isaidnoalready · 23/07/2022 22:51

Coconut oil on dry hair then After the coconut oil you put the shampoo on the hair rub it in THEN add water takes a couple of soaps but it comes out easier

I used it to treat nits a few times and it worked way better than conditioner

user850301848172 · 23/07/2022 23:08

I use coconut oil and a nit comb to lift everything off dds scalp. So satisfying to see it all lift off. I leave it on for 15-30 minutes.

Bellatrix13 · 24/07/2022 08:15

Coconut oil never worked for my child. Only thing that is working is Mustela (think that’s what it’s called). The cream and the shampoo. His CC is nearly gone now including the bit that kept returning on back of head

DuneFan · 24/07/2022 08:32

Baby oil worked well on my little ones. Easier to wash out too. (Might have gone a bit overboard on the olive/coconut oil when I tried that but both times it took about a week's worth of baths to shift it - poor ds looked like a greasy haired teen!)

melissasummerfield · 24/07/2022 08:37

Any kind of oil will do this, Probably weird but I used to get real satisifaction from a cradle cap removal session 😆

i would just rub the oil in, leave it on for 10 mins then gently remove with a comb being careful not to to scrape the scalp.

KangarooKenny · 24/07/2022 08:38

I used to use olive oil, then I’d very gently lift it off with a comb.
