Toddler vomiting with a cold

My son has had a cold/sore throat since Monday, he has coughing and has alot of phlegm built up in his chest/throat, which I think is making him sick.
He has been sick 5 times now altogether in a week.
All the times have been usually once he has eaten, not long after waking.
Could it be the phlegm sitting whilst he has been asleep?
Has anyone had this with their little ones?
I know he hasn't got a sickness bug as he seems OK, other than feeling sad about having a cold.

Sounds like he might have covid, to me - vomiting and/or diarrhoea are common symptoms, alongside with cold or flu like signs, and a cough; and yesterday a sore throat was announced as the most common symptom of current variants. Poor mite. Hope he feels better soon.

Cold plus vomiting is classic covid in babies and toddlers.

Mindymomo · 15/07/2022 14:26

I take it you’ve tested for covid, does he have a temperature.

My 20month old is the exact same. Gets herself in such a state coughing that she is sick.

Its horrible isnt it? I managed to get a covid swab done on her and it was negative and GP just says its viral ... it's their answer to everything at the moment 😵‍💫

My 2yo was like this when she had covid too. You can try infant piriton to dry up the mucus a bit, that can help the snotty nose and coughing.

My son always vomits with cold. Always. I agree it's likely the phlegm. He coughs to bring it up then vomits. He's 3 now, but has done this every single time he's had a cold since he was a baby.

crispsandwichplease · 15/07/2022 22:55

My toddler does this when he has a cold, didn't do it when he had covid though for everyone saying it's that. He doesn't usually seem phased by it. Nightmare as nursery send him home for 48 hours every time though (which I get but I know it's not a bug).

Whoatealltheminieggs · 15/07/2022 23:02

My first always threw up repeatedly with any cold.

Emmelina · 15/07/2022 23:03

As others have said, test for covid. I’m currently on day 4 and this batch gives sore throat, cold etc.

justasking111 · 15/07/2022 23:05

Infant piriton would be my suggestion too. My DS had we discovered eventually asthma and allergic rhinitis which he grew out of. He was sick like this

theAntsareMyFriends · 15/07/2022 23:05

My 2 year old does this too. It doesn't bother him much although getting covered in slimy, mucousy vomit bothers me!

He should grow out of it although my friends 5 year old still does it so may be a long wait.

Colds affect small children so differently. My oldest always gets a cough, my middle gets asthma and my youngest vomits. I always got painful ear infections so could be worse.

DD coughs until she's sick, or gags on the phlegm. Try to raise the head end of his bed a bit and prop his head up on pillows, it should help the phlegm to stay down rather than settle in the throat. Warm tea and honey if he'll drink it. Encourage drinks during coughing

AliceMcK · 15/07/2022 23:10

Has happened a lot with my 3 DCs. It could definitely be covid but not necessarily, for mine it’s a combination of snot, phlegm, fever and just being run down. As long his fluids are up and he’s hydrated I’d not worry too much. But definitely trust your instincts if you feel it’s more than a cold.

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 15/07/2022 23:12

Two of mine did this with every cold until about age 5 it's the grotty mucus going into their stomach
try to get them to sleep on their tummy if at all possible
we also found a good steamy shower (possibly not in this weather though!) got rid of as much gunk as possible before bed

MissSparkles81 · 16/07/2022 10:55

Def gonna try piriton today 🙏

Maray1967 · 16/07/2022 16:55

It might be covid but both of mine vomited with a cold when they were toddlers. I think because they can’t blow their nose and get rid of mucus that way it settles on their stomach and after a while the stomach can’t tolerate it and up it comes.
However, in their cases it was only ever the once each time, not five times.

Jules912 · 16/07/2022 20:16

My DD always vomited with a cough/cold when she was a toddler. Not sure when she grew out of it as lockdown happened when she was 4 and she didn't get ill for 18months

rhowton · 16/07/2022 20:23

My DD3 is often sick if she had a cold. The snot makes her cough and then she's sick.
