How many items of school uniform do you buy?

DS is starting nursery in September so looking to know roughly what the average amount of items everyone buys
He has to wear a polo top, jumper and trousers all with the school logo on them. There's also a rain jacket, fleece, winter hat and summer hat available.

School have said black shoes, wellies, gloves also required

How many of each item is enough as it's adding up to be quite expensive

I used to have a polo top a day, three trousers and three jumpers, George at Asda because it used to get wrecked, it's cheap and cheerful and washed ok, no complaints. If you have to get them all from school I'd just go for a couple and get ready to do loads of late night washing and overnight drying. You can always add more if it's not enough.

RuthW · 15/07/2022 12:05

I agree with above

blessedbethebutter · 15/07/2022 12:08

I also agree with the above. I only use to put a white wash on once a week so 5 polos and then I'd wash trousers and jumpers midweek for the rest of the week.

Do you HAVE to buy the logo items because my children have been to several different primary schools and all implied on website than you should buy didn’t comment if you bought the right coloured items from the supermarket. In fact if it is a state school I don’t think they are allowed to insist on specific uniform anymore.

whosaidtha · 15/07/2022 12:11

2 jumpers and 2 polos. 2 trousers and 2 shorts. 1 pe top. He has to go in pe kit on Wednesday so can wash uniform on Wednesdays.
I also bought it all at the school summer fayre for £5. Logo tops £1 each.

DappledThings · 15/07/2022 13:10

I have 15 polos but they are pretty much the only white things in the whole house so I need a decent number of them to build up a whites wash. Only 4 are logo ones, they can't insist on it.

3 jumpers and 6 pairs of trousers/shorts. But my child is incapable of eating without covering himself in lunch so needs new trousers every day.

BettyOBarley · 15/07/2022 13:22

Our junior school still insists on logo'd stuff - cardigans/jumper and full PE kit have to be logo'd! I think the new rule is that they can't insist on one particular supplier.

I started out with 5 of everything but won't do that again, except t shirts. Prob 3 trousers/skirts/cardigans and 5 polo shirts.

Yodaisawally · 15/07/2022 13:43

I went back to work ft when mine started school and didn't have a tumble drier so Dts had a full set for each day. I couldn't be doing with washing and trying to get uniform dry after work.my kids were dirt magnets though.

AegonT · 15/07/2022 14:23

I got 5 jumpers, 5 polos and 5 trousers (well 2 trousers and 3 skirts and tights). It was so I didn't have to worry if the washing had been done during the week. Also she is a messy eater so it got food on it daily. I would only get one of the hats, fleece etc.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 15/07/2022 14:27

Depends on the colour of the polos!

DS wears white ones and in this sort of weather when he isn't wearing a jumper they come home everyday covered in food, muck, grass stains, paint etc etc. Honestly I could go through one a day. Two if I was at school with him.

Ours also wear PE kit two days a week from next year so I've got 6 polos, 4 trousers, 2 shorts, 2 crew neck jumpers and 2 hoodies.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/07/2022 14:28

Is it a private school? Full branded everything is a ridiculous request for a state nursery.

Mine had 5polos, 3 bottoms, 2 jumpers or cardigans in the required colour. Nothing with the school logo on at all.

SallyWD · 15/07/2022 14:28

I agree with others - I have 3 jumpers or cardigans, 3 skirts or trousers and 5 polo tops. It's always plenty abd we often don't use everything each week but handy for those weeks when they get particularly grubby.

Hatsoff5 · 15/07/2022 14:28

George shopper too. Trousers are usually in a pack of 2. So I buy 4 pairs of trousers. 5 polo's at least and 2 tshirts.

Agree with school jumpers too. I usually have 2 logo ones and spare plain jumpers.

VioletToes · 15/07/2022 14:29

I'm so surprised by 5 jumpers?!?

My DC have 1 jumper, 2 shirts, 1 winter skirt and 2 summer dresses each.

The jumpers are never dirty, though they're wool and if they do get some mess, a wet wipe always cleans it.

My DC are obviously unusually clean (which I know not to be true...).

Cyw2018 · 15/07/2022 14:35

eBay is good for school shoes in little sizes where the kids feet grow quicker than they wear the shoes out. You can buy foot measurers from Clarks and other companies (or ask around on your community FB group as there is a good chance someone will have one), or I just go same width next size up for DD.

Uniform wise, I run a wash 3 times a week, so only need 3 sets of uniform. I aim for
pinafore/leggings/polo shirt, skirt/leggings/polo shirt, trousers (tailored jogging bottoms) polo shirt for winter

couple of summer dresses and pair of shorts in summer.

Spare polo shirt/leggings in school bag (either a poor condition hand me down or the next size up from my stash)

Jumpers - zip hoodie so DD can take it off herself as she still struggles with a jumper, thin cardigans as school is so hot inside.

Try to have a minimum of one logo polo shirt and jumper for school trips.

Ask around as lots of people will be able to give you second hand, and there my be someone in the community collecting and selling second hand for the PTA.

I'm in Wales so uniform policy is very laid back, but my understanding is similar rules are coming in in England so don't go crazy on purchasing expensive uniform with logos on.

DappledThings · 15/07/2022 14:46

In two years DS has come home in a jumper that wasn't covered in beans/yoghurt/felt tip and clean enough for a second day about 5 times. He is just filthy!

hazellad · 15/07/2022 14:47

That's part of the email, I've blocked out the name of their supplier but it doesn't say it has to be bought from the supplier, it just say these are the supplier details, I'm sure if i got a mix of stuff with some with the logo it would be fine

@DappledThings

Haha mine are the same from ages 6 to 11 always come home covered in something and the amount of items that get lost too!

SheWoreYellow · 15/07/2022 14:49

It depends if you are able to run a wash mid week or not.

We were fine on two jumpers/trousers/pinafores as I didn’t mind doing a quick evening wash occasionally.
Also I had one who didn’t get very dirty and two who did!

Fifthtimelucky · 15/07/2022 14:55

I had 2 skirts, 1 jumper, 1 cardigan and 3 shirts (plus 2 summer dresses) for each child.

I expected them to wear everything more than once before I washed it. The only branded item was the jumper.

MeridianGrey · 15/07/2022 15:13

@hazellad honestly done bother with logos, so much cheaper and easier from the supermarket . When they first start it is play based with lots of time outside so expect them to be filthy at the end of each day. How much you buy depends on how often you wash but I would say at least four of everything.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/07/2022 15:22

Ours used to have 5 polos - only 1 with the logo, 2 shorts and 2 jumpers (with the logo)

As long as everything is well named - I like the easy2name iron in name labels anythung that was left behind was returned. Secondary is a different matter when it comes to lost property.
