Worried 18 month old is "fat"

My son is 18 months and has always been chubby ever since he was born. But I'm wondering when that stops being excusable and when it becomes a problem.

He is 13.6kg at the moment which puts him in on the 90th percentile which is consistent with when he was born.

He eats tonnes of fruit but I struggle finding veg he'll eat. I admit I don't make homemade from scratch chef style nutritious meals every day, he just eats whatever we eat sometimes it'll be particularly healthy / homemade and others it might be fishfingers and mash from the freezer.

For breakfast he tends to have a piece of toast and fruit, for lunch a wrap with a meat like ham and cheese and a yoghurt, offer veg but he refused it 9/10 and then whatever we have for tea. For snacks he might have like an Ella's kitchen fruit bar or a flavoured rice cake / biscotti.

I'm not strict on treats so he has had things like ice creams on a hot day, bits of chocolate etc ... Not every day obviously. But it's not a case of he never ever eats junk. He does sometimes.

But anyway... He still fits in the right size clothes but he always seems to have a big pot belly and just generally looks bigger than some toddlers I've seen of friends at the same age.

What percentile for height?

Kooolkid · 13/07/2022 20:26

I can't remember exactly re height but it was very similar to weight as he's very tall for his age.

That makes a difference. 90% for both is fine. 9 for height 90 for weight is very very problematic.

My absolutely enormously fat baby girl was Avery chubby toddler and still a fairly squishy preschooler. Now she's 6, tall and thin as a rake. She fell over the other day and it looked like a clothes horse collapsing!
You're doing great. Carry on and check him against the charts just before he starts school.

DD was a giant but proportionate. She's a typical skinny 11 yo old, still very tall.

Kooolkid · 13/07/2022 20:31

Thank you!

Yes he's definitely tall for his age. People can never believe it when I say he's only 18 months.

He was playing with a little girl who was 2.5 earlier this evening and he was taller than her.

If It is in proportion to his height percentile then he's not fat

Confuzzled19 · 13/07/2022 20:35

yes you need to consider weight and height. It’s good you are keeping an eye on this, most people will think it’s ridiculous to think this way about a child, but that’s the reason we have a huge obesity problem in this country. It starts young (preschool/primary years).

snowflake29 · 13/07/2022 20:43

My son was exactly the same, I couldn't see his ribs til he was over 2. He's now just over 3 and is verging on skinny because he never stops running about! He's also tall for his age. If height and weight are in proportion he's fine

i would nt worry about it . my daughter was really chubby but now 9 year old , very skinny

Footbal · 14/07/2022 08:58

My niece who is now 17 was very chubby as a baby and toddler, rolls upon rolls. The health visitor warned by sister that she was setting her up for a life of obesity and heart problems....

She is now 5ft 11, a size 6 and eats like a horse.
