White noise? Advice please

Never really used this! Baby hasn’t slept through ever he’s 6.5 months but he’s been sleeping fantastic in his room but he’s had a small fan on too due to the weather

Part of me wonders if the sound of the fan has helped? He’s not a horrendous sleeper but when he wakes for his 1 bottle in the night I feel it takes a bit of time to resettle him (like half an hour) and sometimes he has quite short naps

If I got a white noise machine would he get too used to it? And not sleep well without it ever??

tips please x

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for white noise machine recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best white noise machines page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

My DS started using a white noise machine at around 5ish months. I find it helps massively with his sleep. He's now almost 12 months and can easily fall asleep without his white noise machine so definitely not too reliant on it. Even if he was though, I wouldn't have minded as they're cheap enough you can buy a couple to have spare for any travel time etc. Plus I listen to rain sounds to help me sleep so I feel like I cant be mad if DS relies on his white noise haha. I'd say go for it!

We just have an iPad app and stick the iPad on airplane mode - could you try that first? Ours is the sound sleeper app - ds2 has just turned 2 and has the mountain sounds on most nights (drowns out the neighbours barking dog which wakes us up!)

I sleep with a fan / fan heater (on cold) because the noise helps me to sleep. Works for DS too. Never bothered with a white noise machine though so you could just stick with the fan

Re waking for bottle, does he wake around a similar time each night? When my DS started doing that (around 1am) I would set an alarm for say 1245 to get ahead of him, and give him his bottle while asleep and he'd stay asleep. Eventually he stopped waking in the night and slept through without a feed

My DS definitely sleeps more soundly and for longer when his white noise machine is on. He’s 4.5 months old so will use it for the foreseeable future. When I feel that the time is right to stop using it, apparently turning the volume down slightly each day until it’s eventually no longer used works well to wean them off it.

We have an amazon echo in our room and play white noise through that overnight. I find it has helped all of my children sleep better and make good sleep routines and associations.

Whit noise is amazing.
Started using Ewan the sheep but smbaby started waking when the nose stopped.
Tried Spotify playlist with alexa worked well but had to rewind the playlist once a night and I couldnt use my phone for fear of a video playing and interrupting
Finally bought a dream egg... Best buy ever. It wasn't dear and holds a charge really well. Plays while charging too. Its portable as well.

We have a tommee tippee bear white noise machine at nighttime (we use the heartbeat sound) and for his nap we use a free app on our phone, tablet, etc (washing machine noise). We've used these since DS was 6 weeks old (now 18mo).

From experience, I don't think they get too used to it. My DS now associates those noises with bedtime / naps so I think helps set his expectation of what time it is. In terms of becoming reliant on it, we've never tried without the bear at bedtime, but for some naps if he's in the pram and we're out and about he doesn't have the app on then and still sleeps fine.

Ive been using white noise/rain noise for the past 11 months with my little one and now its on every night. I would absolutely try it and see the results. I think not having the break in sound helps reduce the chance of the baby waking up when there actually is a noise. My neighbours like to slam car doors but the white noise helps to muffle it.

As for the bottle it may help they dream feed as theyre not waking into silence.

I got one from amazon - was about £15 and its amazing. The rain one actually helps me sleep better too!

We got one around the same age and it's been amazing. We only use it in her room and she sleeps fine without it in her pram when we're out. We visited family when she was around 10 months and I forgot it, and I forgot the travel black out blind. She slept fine without it and in a light room, so you might be pleasantly surprised!
