Potential tongue tie issues

Hi! My son is 5.5 months old, he is exclusively breast fed (and won’t take a bottle - but that’s another issue!). He was diagnosed with ‘flexible’ tongue tie when he was a few days old, but as we had no problems feeding they didn’t do anything about it. He is quite obviously tongue tied though, as you can see it so clearly. He also suffered badly with reflux as a newborn and it only really settled at around a month ago. Another thing to add is he always sleeps with his mouth open and very lightly. Anyway, we have started to think about weaning and have tried him with a few different things. We have tried both whole veg and homemade purees, after every thing he has tried (tried about 5 times over the last week) he has seemed so keen but then is very very sick of anything goes down at all. I have only just read about it possibly being a link to tongue tie (as well as realising his reflux was probably due to tongue tie too!). When I rang the health visitor, she absolutely wanted nothing to do with it and was very dismissive as he isn’t 6 months yet: (he is 6 months in 2 weeks). I know this is technically true but how much can change in 2 weeks? I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this experience and if I should look into getting it cut? Or if it’s too late and will be too traumatic / painful for him now he’s bigger? I very much doubt I will get an appointment with the nhs but happy to go private if it means he won’t struggle later on in life with eating / speech etc. let me know if you have any thoughts or experiences? Thanks !

My son had a quite severe tongue tie that wasn't noticed at birth. I hadn't heard of this and only became fully aware when he couldn't latch on. Health visitor was helpful but we decides to have it separated at 10 months old. As much as anything I wanted him to be able to lick an ice cream! He had a general anesthetic and was right as rain awa

Sorry! He was fine afterwards and now his tongue is completely normal.

Ah thank you. I keep reading different things and worrying myself he won’t feed / be in too much pain but I think I should do it. Did you have to go private? Health visitor mentioned about referring us (if he’s still being sick after 6 months) but I don’t know how long that process will take.

We were referred to the local children's hospital by our GP. We only had to wait a few weeks. My son also had bad reflux up to this point which disappeared almost immediately. Good luck, it made a big difference to my son and I'm so pleased we had it done.
