PICTURE INCLUDED Nine month old constipation question

My nine month olds poo has changed recently and I'm unsure whether she is constipated or it's her poo changing due to solids. She has three meals a day. I contacted the doctors regarding this and was prescribed lactulose Wednesday but as of yet there has been no change. Just wanted to see if others thought they looked constipated or if it's just her poo firming up due to solids. Thanks.

Is she struggling when she poos @lalallola? Does she seem uncomfortable at all?

Yes sometimes she will grunt and go stiff and I can tell she's doing a poo whereas before they would pass easily.

So she's not crying or distressed?

It might be worth making sure she gets plenty of fluids, especially in this heat and include water rich foods like strawberries, melon, homemade lollies, jelly, broccoli and cauliflower.

I'd also know more constipating foods on the head for a couple of days st least like sweet potato, baby rice and bananas.

No except one occasion where she cried as she was pooing but as I said that was only the once. Thank you for your help I'll do that.

I didn't think wholewheat anything was advised for under 2's or has it changed recently?

Moominmammashouse · 11/07/2022 22:01

Ooops oh dear I didn't realise

FannyFifer · 11/07/2022 22:02

That just looks like a regular, normal poo. Doesn't seem to be hard & constipated.

You can also try prunes or prune juice, when my DD had troubles that was the only thing that was helping her.

ljdxxx · 11/07/2022 22:07

I posted on here about my 7 month old being constipated since we started new foods, someone told me about prunes, you can either pop them in hot water and mush them or buy the ellas kitchen pouches 100% prunes, and they work wonders, he only has a few spoons full now and again mixed in with his porridge when I know he's struggling and the next day he poos easier. But he's getting used to it now so we haven't used them for a while.

my 9month old can have very similar poos and then other days it's like being back to when he was ebf... I think it really depends on what they have eaten and drunk in that day.

if they don't seem to be in distress and are fairly regular and don't seem to have discomfort in their belly I wouldn't be too worried.

Personally I would be exploring higher fibre foods in the first instance if I was worried and leaving the prescription as a back up.

on the plus side... poos like that are much easier to clean up and put down the toilet!

feellikemyselfagain · 11/07/2022 22:19

Looks very normal to me. My 15 month old sometimes looks uncomfortable doing a poo but I think it just becomes more of an effort to push one out into their nappies as it's more solid than milk poo

Hi,

I would say constipated my 10 month would gets quite upset if she has a poo like that.
Second, prunes and other fruits/watery foods.
I find this happens if I've given her too many starchy snacks to bribe her into the pram.
