Nursery in the heat

Quick question to gauge other opinions,as dp and I had different reactions.
4 year old goes to a really lovely nursery who look after her well. We do the heat/suncream/water/ appropriate clothes, obviously. As the temperature is likely over 30 today, would you keep her off? There is a parent at home, but stuff to do,but would only be inconvenient rather than anything else, and obviously four year old comes first.
Any thoughts?

No I wouldn't keep her off.

Whoareyoumyfriend · 11/07/2022 06:35

I'm keeping my 4 year old off today but mostly because he didn't manage to sleep until 10 30pm!

Whoareyoumyfriend · 11/07/2022 06:36

But I would ordinarily send him in. His older brother is off today as school has an inset day

Why on earth would you keep them off? What is the logic in doing that?

Send them in, they will be fine.

MsSquiz · 11/07/2022 06:38

Why would you keep her off due to the temperature?

3amAndImStillAwake · 11/07/2022 06:38

I don't understand why you'd keep her off

CrabbyCat · 11/07/2022 06:42

The morning should be fine. If you are worried about them not coping with the heat you could pick up after lunch, when it's at its hottest?

This was my thinking, but wanted to see if I was missing something 😁👍 Thanks all.

I would always keep mine off if I was at home and it was a really a hot day!

Why would you keep her off?

What is it that is making you think she shouldn't go in?

So interesting as I work in a nursery and just can’t understand why parents send kids in when it’s a heatwave and they are at home. Of course some parents don’t have the luxury of choice but lots do. Let them stay home and run around in their swimming trunks and dip in and out of a paddling pool if you can. They are only young once!

Honestly this is going to sound selfish but part of the reason is because I've got to pay an extortionate amount to the nursery to then keep them home.

I don't begrudge paying when they are home sick or when they were isolating but why would I keep them home if it meant I couldn't do the jobs I needed to get done as easily and still pay nursery when they could instead be having fun at nursery whilst I did all the boring jobs that needed doing unencumbered?

PeppaPigIsAnnoying · 11/07/2022 06:56

No because DD goes to nursery as we're both at work

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 11/07/2022 06:59

I would definitely send her in.
The nursery we use has lovely air conditioning throughout for days like today and I'm miserable in the heat so it's definitely the right place for my DD to be today.
And I don't have the option of keeping her home as I'll be in work feeling jealous of the aircon at nursery!

itispersonal · 11/07/2022 07:02

I work in a foundation unit,( 3-5yo), I would keep them off, I know the heat in the unit is going to be unbearable!

Better to keep them at home in a cool shade, paddling pool.

If I could get away with my 9yo not going to school I would!

My thought was it'll be fine,as nursery is really good with this sort of thing, though I did think the idea of lunchtime pick could be useful. Think dp was just thinking of running around in this heat compared to shade and paddling pool

Love idea that the alternative is automatically cool shade and a paddling pool (looks around second floor, one bed flat with no outdoor space or aircon). DD is definitely going in today!

Skinnermarink · 11/07/2022 07:09

Well if I had the luxury of keeping mine off to play in a paddling pool on a weekday then I wouldn’t need the services of a nursery in the first place, and that service is extortionate. So no I absolutely would not be considering keeping them at home.

And this!!! We have a communal garden but organising the paddling pool in it is a two person job while one person stays with DS and the other arses about with the hose pipe and getting the pool out of the shed etc. Not practical.

headiiinthecloudsssss · 11/07/2022 07:20

I get some people will arrange a fun day and keep their kids off to play in the pool and have a nice time.

It's the ones that seem to think it's risky or dangerous to send them in that baffle me. Its the local nursery not the Sahara desert. They can have plenty of drinks and shade and sun scream and stay indoors.

SquigglePigs · 11/07/2022 07:24

Our nursery are great with the heat. They get outside in the morning when it's cooler. There are shaded areas for the kids to plan in. Fans in the rooms to help keep it cool. Plenty of quiet activities so they aren't running around in the worst of the heat.

Whendovescry03 · 11/07/2022 07:25

DSs nursery turns into a sauna in the heat. His poor keyworkers have been looking very hot and bothered recently.

I'd still send him though as our house gets even hotter and he'd have to sit in it while I worked if I kept him off nursery.

fyn · 11/07/2022 07:29

It depends on your nursery, on hot days ours sets up a massive slip and slide with big paddling pools. In the hottest part of the day the either go into the yurt in the woods of back inside the classroom. Much more fun than being at home in tiny our garden with no shade!

Havanawinter · 11/07/2022 22:31

Ours has a trip to the zoo planned tomorrow for all the leavers starting school in September. I think it’s a lovely idea but I’m considering not sending DS as they’ll be outside all day and I’m not sure how realistically 4 grown ups can make sure 30 kids stay hydrated and too up sunscreen. Don’t know what to do!

bambiiii · 11/07/2022 22:49

I don't get the hysteria over a bit of hot weather.

We have actual amber weather warnings over it on BBC weather Hmm it says adverse health effects, potential for serious illness or death, changes to working practices and daily routines advised.

Ffs it's 30 odd degrees and it will only last a couple of days before it's pissing down and we will all be at risk of death due to drowning in rain.

We live in Britain where we have access to everything we need, not stranded in the middle of an African desert.

Wear a hat, put suncream on, have water easily accessible, rest in the shade sometimes and have a good day before the weather goes to shit again.
