Cold water sterilisation

I normally use a Dr Brown steam steriliser for bottles etc however I’ve been given a Nuby rapid cooler as a gift. Whilst the Nuby flasks can be sterilised in my steam steriliser, the digital lids cannot. The instructions booklet says they’re suitable for cold water sterilisation. I have a packet of Milton sterilising tablets but had a couple of questions on how to do this.

  1. the tablets say 1tablet to 5l water. As I don’t have a cold water steriliser, am I safe to just fill any big container with 5l water and a tablet and leave the lids in it to sterilise?
  2. For how long do I give them before they’re sterilised?

We have an all day event out and about coming up next week so would love to make use of these coolers when we’re out so would appreciate any advice Smile

The instructions say minimum 15 minutes. yes you can put them in any clean container.
Pop baby items into the Milton Sterilising Solution and ensure they are completely submerged for a minimum of 15 minutes to become sterilised. Solution is effective for 24 hours

Perfect! Now to find a big enough container…

Yes as above, and I would assume you could do half a tablet to 2.5 litres of water if needs be.

@Puddlelane123 That might be more doable if it’s an option, it’s just two fairly small lids I need to sterilise. I’m clueless about this as I’ve never had to do it and I’m always freaking out about things being sterilised properly! A friend of mine said she would just try sterilise them in boiling water but I’m assuming that might damage them if it’s specified on the instructions that all heat-based sterilising methods aren’t suitable. Thanks both for your advice Smile

Buy Milton liquid it gives you the mix rate on the bottle so you can use a smaller container

Mine are older now but when they were babies I got sterilisation bags with the tablets in for when away ( you just fill the bag and put whatever you need to sterilise in), so that may be another option if you don't want to lug a container around.

Just make sure they are fully submerged. I used a steam steriliser for DC1&2, and cold water for DC3. It was so much easier! Not sure why I hadn’t thought of it earlier.

Will have a look out for the liquid, that’s a good shout. These tablets just came with a pregnancy goodie pack so happened to have them in the cupboard but the liquid sounds more convenient. Will be sterilising at home before we set out for the day.

The tablets are designed so that they can be broken into quarters. I had the Milton travel steriliser which was 1.25L, so only needed a quarter tablet. I imagine any container will do, but as PP said, just make sure everything is fully submerged.

Cold water sterilising is bloody handy, I don't know how much the actual Milton steriliser 'bucket' is but the lid is designed so that it pushes everything below the surface of the liquid and keeps everything submerged. I used it for my first DC and it was so easy. Whenever I tried to use a different container to do smaller things they would all pop back up to the surface and not submerge properly so you'll need to find a way of keeping them under the liquid or just get a proper Milton bucket (you never know, it might come in handy later on for sterilising larger non baby related things once in a while, my dad used mine for his camelback cycling stuff 😂)

Thanks! These lids seem heavy like they’ll sink to the bottom so hopefully they’ll be fine.
