Baby vomited at 2am! I don’t know what to do?

So my toodler who is 2 has been find through the day at 2am he got up gagging and started vomiting his food he had for dinner. The vomit was very light pink and it was rice. He has strawberry yogurt and rice in dinner and strawberry in snack. I guess that’s why the colour was light pink. He has gone back to sleep should I be worried? Or could it just be over eating?

At 2am it’s mostly likely he is unwell. There is no need to panic but I would expect more sick and would be cancelling any weekend plans he has.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 09/07/2022 03:03

I agree that he probably has some kind of stomach bug, but don't panic. Let him sleep, check him regularly and see if he can keep down food/drink in the morning.

StickWithYSL · 09/07/2022 03:09

Does he have a temp too? My little one had covid that started with vomit - that was the only instance, but they were unwell for about a week.

If he has gone back to sleep it’s probably just a tummy bug.

Have an at home day tomorrow so you can monitor him and check for other symptoms. The main thing is to keep him hydrated. I’d stay away from really fatty and rich foods - more toast and banana and rice that are less likely to upset his tummy more.

Towels are really good at catching vomit when they are so little so keep a supply handy

HoppingPavlova · 09/07/2022 03:19

I’m staggered your child has made it to 2yo without bugs that cause vomiting. I think it’s been a case of everyone being hidden away for the last few years has robbed babies/toddlers/young kids of the usual bug merry go round, and many are now paying the price with their systems only being started to be primed now.

From what you have written it sounds like a Joe average tummy bug. Just keep an eye out for symptoms indicating anything worse, and if so seek appropriate attention, but likely will just be run of the mill.

Things like lemonade icy poles or even hydrolyte frozen sticks can be your friends at times such as these if needed.

Not sure of the relevance of the yoghurt and rice?

NishaaS123 · 09/07/2022 03:23

He woke up and vomited again this time the vomit was clear. I am guessing it is a stomach bug he has had stomach bug before but never vomited at 2am so I panicked.
i mentioned the yogurt and rice because he had a pink vomit so I got scared.

scarletisjustred · 09/07/2022 04:17

An icy pole is an ice block if you're wondering.

chilledbubble · 09/07/2022 04:24

Heya op. I would put towels down around the cot/bed to make clear up easier. Just keep an eye on them and try to keep them hydrated so once vomiting has settled a bit little sips of water.

HoppingPavlova · 09/07/2022 04:29

Stomach bugs don’t work on a 9-5 schedule, vomiting can strike anywhere within the 24hrs including during sleep hours. The pink yoghurt will result in pink vomit. Tomato based sauces will come up an orangey colour etc.

changzi · 09/07/2022 05:17

The poor little man. I agree with the advice above, the time of day really isn't cause for concern, it just relates to when he picked up the bug and when his body started to respond.

Mine have frequently started their vomiting in the middle of the night. It's not at all fun to clean up at that hour.

itsgettingweird · 09/07/2022 05:20

Awww bless him and you.

It's horrid when your little mines are sick and quite disturbing at 2am.

Yes it sounds like he has a tummy bug. Keep an eye on his fluid intake and wet nappies. Give ice lollies if he'll eat them.

Have a look at the BRAT diet for when he's ready to eat again.

And yes - I'm sure link sick was even more alarming! But it would have been the strawberries and pink yoghurt!

Fcuk38 · 09/07/2022 06:13

so you’ve never had a stomach bug where you’ve been sick in the early hours?

NishaaS123 · 09/07/2022 06:17

@itsgettingweird

thank you he’s never had such a bad stomach bug which has me worried I haven’t fed him anything I have got an appointment with the gp for 8.30am he’s been throwing up clear fuilds all night so I am worried for him to be dehydrated.

@Fcuk38
no I have not! I am just a worried mum trying to get some advice.

bbn81 · 09/07/2022 06:23

Is your appointment with the GP over the phone as I am not sure you should be taking a child with a stomach bug anywhere near other people. When mine get bugs it is usually 24 hours of sleep and vomit before it clears. Keep him at home and keep as hydrated as possible even if he keeps bringing it back up.

NishaaS123 · 09/07/2022 06:25

@bbn81
yes it is over the phone once I spoke to nhs 111 they gave me a telephone consultation. I won’t be taking him near anyone unless it’s really serious.

OP posts:
Herejustforthisone · 09/07/2022 06:31

I’m not sure you need a GP appointment. There’s nothing much they can do for stomach bugs. Just keep them hydrated and eating soft, unchallenging foods.

The best advice is on this thread. Later up bedsheets/sleep him on layers of towels, put towels around the bed, get ice lollies in, and be prepared to get it yourself.

Footle · 09/07/2022 06:56

@Herejustforthisone, what OP wants is reassurance from the GP.

NishaaS123 · 09/07/2022 07:08

@Footle
yes exactly as I said my sons never had such a bad stomach bug so this is new for me so I just want to make sure x

WeAllLikeVindaloo · 09/07/2022 07:42

My son had exactly the same last week. Vomited all his dinner at 10pm in bed and spent the rest of the night bringing up bile. Then after that he was just off it for a couple of days because he was shattered.
Theres so many bugs going round at the moment particularly at nursery. Hope your little one is better soon.

DillonPanthersFNL · 09/07/2022 07:45

I don't understand why you called 111 for pink vomit when he ate a strawberry yogurt for tea? He'll feel like crap for a couple of days, you'll get it and he'll be bouncing round, you really don't need to speak to a gp.

WonderingWanda · 09/07/2022 08:24

I'm sure it must have worried you a bit op, I can remember not being sure when to leave them be and when to seek help. I had a few good books that were useful with advice about common childhood illnesses. The NHS website is great for advice too.

Normally vomiting bugs last 24hrs. They can't always keep fluids down at first but keep trying, I find flat lemonade stays down better than water, just sips at first. Stay off food till they can keep liquids down. It's more comfortable for them to vomit up some orange squash rather than acid bile.

Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration, are they still having wet nappies? Pinch the skin gently on the back of their hand if it snaps back flat that's a good sign, if it stays in a ridge that's bad. Not sure how old your little one is but on babies if their fontanelle dips in that's another sign.

Hope your little one feels better soon!

NishaaS123 · 09/07/2022 10:47

@WeAllLikeVindaloo
aw bless my one has stopped vomiting now fingers crossed, I spoke to gp they said just make sure to look out for dehydration so I am giving him plenty to drink. Just as a first time mum you do get worried.

@WonderingWanda
yes Exactly it worried me specially when my child has never had such a bad stomach bug I just wanted to make sure all is okay and he doesn’t need any medical attention. Thank you for understanding.

@DillonPanthersFNL

as I have mentioned before being a first time mum with anxiety and not having my child have such a bad stomach bug before worried me so I just wanted to speak to the gp to make sure he doesn’t need any medical attention I don’t see anything wrong with it :)

chilledbubble · 09/07/2022 10:51

@NishaaS123 Heya OP. Don't worry you've done exactly the right thing, spoken to 111 and they've suggested the GP rings you. Nothing wrong with that. I hope LO is a bit better now x

NishaaS123 · 09/07/2022 10:57

@chilledbubble

Hi thank you so much, he’s feeling better now hasn’t vomited for a few hours now fingers crossed, gp did say he thinks he gone through the worst part of it. Thanks for understanding xx
