Shift work

Hi,

I returned to work 3 months ago after mat leave. I have a 1yr old and a 3 yr old. I'm a nurse and I have a 9-5 job. I have reduced down to 3 days. You would think this would be the ideal set up, but we have no support if the kids are ill. One or other seem to be ill soo frequently, we've had bugs, covid or dnv twice. My oldest is off now with a bug and tempature. I feel soo stressed and that I am letting work down. I'm struggling to keep on top of things in work, I've had to take sick because of covid and dnv and then carers leave.

Anyway, I was thinking of switching to bank shift work? Just not sure if I will regret it later down the line, if it would work out harder or if it would be practically easier and less stressful for me to do this until the kids are older.

It's shit isn't it. I have a one year old and returning to work in two weeks. He's done his settling in sessions at nursery and we have already got a cold🤦🏻‍♀️I have no one that can take him and this was one of my concerns about returning to work. I spoke with my manager about it and she was very much like these things happen but I don't know if this will still be the same when I no doubt have to call in to look after him. Theoretically bank work would still be letting someone down just not "your team" so maybe a better pill to swallow.

Shift work is brutal on families. Where is their dad in all of this? He should be doing at least half the sick leave.

We both did shifts when kids smaller. I think it's better for covering emergencies like sick child unable to go to childcare because there is less likelihood of both parents being on shift at that actual time. But we had to do a lot of looking after kids before/ after night shifts. It was worth it for us, plus imo additional benefits. Contrary to a pp, I don't think shift work is brutal on families....I think office hours are worse!

I've done shift work. I'm in outpatients now. Shift work is harder you exhaust yourself and the type of departments are a lot heavier and busier.

Could you do 1 night and 1 early shift OP a week? I wouldn't take agency on and quit a permanent role unless your happy to risk being constantly moved around.
