Confusing formula bottle making guidelines

Hi,

Am I the only one who thinks that boiling a kettle and then leaving it for 30 mins to cool, will completely cool off the water ? Isn't a hot water shot required to sterilise the formula powder like how a prep machine does ? I am trying to move to powder one from ready made ones, and finding it all confusing.

You are correct, what are the actual instructions?
If you add cold after the hot, that should probably be pre boiled.

Pinksworthy90 · 08/07/2022 16:07

@TamSamLam The actual instructions I'm referring to on the box is to allow the kettle to cool down for 30 mins, mix advised amount of water and formula, shake and then cool under a tap water.

Mine is still hot after 30 minutes. Nhs guidelines say up to 30 minutes.

It's to leave it to cool for up to 30mins, so if you've boiled it and forgotten about it for longer than 30mins than you need to reboil.

I believe freshly boiled water (at 100 degrees) will breakdown some of the enzymes in the formula. But at 70 degrees 20-30 minutes later the enzymes will remain and the bacteria be killed.

Disclaimer: not a microbiologist and didn't do much formula feeding so far from an expert.

Ooh, thanks ladies. It is upto 30 mins. I can now understand it better. 😊

Apparently it should be up to 30 minutes, rather than for 30 minutes. But it needs to be at least 70 and pretty sure mine cools faster than that. In other words don't leave it.

It's only the water powder ratio that changes between brands, the process should be the same.

I find the expectation that a hungry baby is going to wait over 30mins for a bottle confusing!

SGChome20 · 08/07/2022 20:28

I used to keep a flask of almost boiling water ready to use and one of cooled boiled water, did this when I was out as well. Means you didn’t need to wait for kettles to boil etc.

RidingMyBike · 08/07/2022 20:30

It's up to 30 mins to make sure the water is still above 70 degrees when it hits the formula.

I used to fill kettle, boil, make cup of tea. 10 mins later make bottle and put in cold water to cool. Drink tea.

Also found as baby got more predictable and a freshly made bottle is good for 2 hours at room temp that I'd have a good idea when I'd need to make one so wasn't having to hang around with a howling baby.

😳 I used to fill the bottles in the morning with fresh boiling water and leave them on the side. Midwife said it was fine to do and the HV.

Had DS in 2019 so assumed it was okay 🤷🏻‍♀️. I'm due twins in December and thinking maybe I should invest in a prep machine.
