Protecting my face when playing with children or my nice and nephew

Hello,

When i'm playing with my children, one thing i'm extremely cautious of is protecting my face so that I don't get hit in the face with any toys.

I'm worried about my child accidentally hitting me in the eye with a toy and blinding me, or even just poking me in the eye. (I know the probability of going blind is not high, but even so that's not something I would ever want to risk)

So whenever my child is playing with my hair or my nose or anything, i've usually got my eyes closed as you know how sudden and erratic children's movements can be.

For example, the other day I had my child on top of me, and I kind of had my hands 6 inches away from my face to protect my face, and it's lucky I did because my other child came over and was very excited and threw a rock hard toy that would have hit my directly in the face had I not had my hands covering it.

I was wondering, firstly whether any parents out there take precautions like this?

And secondly whether you have any tips for protecting yourself, as it can take the fun out of things if i'm always on alert for being hit in the face when they're playing close to my face.

I couldn't find a single result on google about parents protecting their face in the event of toys or their child accidentally

thank you

Not the done thing to care about your appearance, really?? Have you seen how busy the style and beauty section is??

Glitterspy · 08/07/2022 11:57

I kind of know what you mean OP, I scrunch my eyes or mouth to protect eyeballs/teeth if DS is on my lap and flailing around but I stop the game if it gets too rough, I wouldn’t lie on the floor and invite rough play while holding my hands 6 inches in front of my face.

Tbh your post has made me wonder if you have a particular reason for wanting to protect just your face specifically (I always get elbowed in the boobs for example, which hurts probably more, or when I was pregnant with DS2 I was very protective of toddler DD jumping on my stomach). Have you had facial work - fillers, lashes, veneers?

@Coughee

thats true!
but you do see on here posts about women who wear makeup etc to the school run or whatever and there will always be a few comments like ‘oh well, I’d rather use that time to play with my kids and spend time with them, I don’t care what I look like ‘ etc etc

@Glitterspy

fillers can be very tender for about a week after, you don’t want a toddler smacking into them!

Yes, sorry it was a spur of the moment response, sorry op.

My comment wasn't specifically aimed at you, just the myriad of unsupportive posts but it's good of you to apologise to the Op.

You should be focussing on telling your children not to throw rock hard toys, or anything else, in the direction of someone's head.

This issue never occurred in my house, nor in the house's of any of my friends with children.

BertieBotts · 08/07/2022 12:26

I'm aware of the possibility but don't really consciously think about it. Obviously you would instinctively turn away if someone is flailing near your face and tell children no/stop/careful/gentle etc.

AegonT · 08/07/2022 13:21

I taught my own children to be gentle with people and animals and not throw toys from a very early age. If anyone else's children can't be gentle I won't play with them close up, nephews included.

My cat has a flat face and very sensitive eyes. The kids play with him and have never hurt his eyes and he doesn't close them/hold his paws out.

I think you're over worrying and this is taking over your thoughts way too much. Are you anxious about other things? You might need some help to get it in perspective.

PinkButtercups · 08/07/2022 14:14

No.

DS doesn't really play with toys close to my face.

HelloAllll · 08/07/2022 14:21

This is very ott

Wear sunglasses? My kids did get in my face when very young. They don't anymore. Thankfully.

I didn't let mine play with my face?! Didn't want my glasses getting damaged for a start. Just moved hands out the way and said "no".
