Overnight nappy changes?

What does everyone do about overnight nappy changes? Do you change with every feed, or only if dirty? I was listening to the crib notes podcast today and they suggested only changing for a poo - but I'm not sure the mamia ones we use would hold out more than one feed cycle.

Wisdom appreciated!

Only when dirty..

They're designed to hold more than one wee... That's why they all go on about 12hrs protection etc so you can leave them on overnight

Only if they poo, and I found mine never pooed at night by about 6 weeks.

Nappies last a good 10-12 hours overnight.

How old is your LO Rose? Unless you've got an older baby or toddler who drinks an awful lot, your Mamia ones will be fine Wink

Absolutely only if they poo! If they don't hold much wee, try a different nappy.

Depends on age I think. As a newborn my son needed changing at every feed. He was constantly pooping (every 2 hours or more). Now he only goes once a day (5 months) I don't change overnight. The nappies are designed to hold overnight pee and keep their skin dry.

Only if they're dirty. They shouldn't leak - if they do you might need a size up in either nappies or vests (the vests can sort of squish them and cause leaks if they're a bit too small). Or try a different brand (though I've never found any difference myself tbh!)

JenniferBarkley · 05/07/2022 21:57

Only if they're dirty, or soaked from feeding all night.

However my second did settle better with a fresh nappy so DH would quickly change her while I nipped to the loo and woke myself up for the feed. We found she slept longer by doing that. Never would've dreamed of that with our first as we never wanted to wake her any more than was absolutely necessary (which I think is more typical).

Only ever changed overnight for a poo or if had leaked, from day 1.

RoseValleyRambles · 06/07/2022 02:32

Super useful - thanks all. We're talking a 3 week old at the mo. Sounds like we can transition to fewer changes :)

I change my 4 week old in between the feed. Wakes him up a bit to finish his bottle.

CatSeany · 06/07/2022 04:14

I buy decent nappies and then only change for a poo. Beaming Baby have been the best I've found for overnight, and the only ones that prevent a rash.

mnnewbie111 · 06/07/2022 04:18

Now they're older I won't even change a poo as how would I know they do it as I'm in a another room. Unfortunately stinks as it's been there longer tho 😂

Maray1967 · 06/07/2022 08:20

I learned that it was a really bad idea not to change nappy before the middle of the night feed when mine was about 6 weeks old. I followed some bad advice about only changing if it was a poo (very rare for mine at night). Result? Nappy rash - and I used pampers which were normally great. So I only didn’t change once - and was so angry with myself. HV told me not to beat myself up about it but moving forward always change before a feed.

Of course the nappies can last a good few hours of wee, especially at just 3 weeks! Its wasteful to change just wet ones at every feed with a newborn, that could be changing every hour or two. We change them when dirty or very wet/not likely to last until the next wee or feed.

Aspidistra1 · 06/07/2022 09:25

I think I started the only for a poo thing when we got out of the newborn nappies with the line on and into the bigger ones. Used to give one boob, change then the other boob after to resettle.

bedtimestories · 06/07/2022 09:31

I breastfed so would change every feed to wake them up sufficiently so they could finish a feed

Teaandcrumpets95 · 06/07/2022 09:34

10 week old here- I quickly learnt unless he did a poo or leaked no point changing him, made my nights much easier and meant I got back to sleep quicker 😅

JLQ1020 · 06/07/2022 10:59

Controversial but I change every feed. My LG wakes once at night and I change her her nappy is usually soaked and she is awake anyway so I think we'll I may as well change her.
Also when she was a newborn I changed her to help wake her up for a feed.

shivawn · 06/07/2022 16:05

Ah your little one is only 3 weeks, I was changing at every feed that age because my baby used to poo so often back then.

Now he is 9 months old and never poops overnight so I just change him before bed and after waking up. We use mamia nappies too and they're soaked by the morning but they never leak. As a previous poster said, he sleeps all night in his own room so if he did happen to poo one night I wouldn't even know about it. Thankfully he's never had nappy rash.
