i am asking for advice for a friend who is interested in becoming a teacher. She has a 9 month old baby and wondered how old he should be before she starts. Is it possible to do it part time?

She doesn't have to do a BEd if it doesn't seem workable for her - she could do a normal degree (in a subject of her choice but "key subjects" like English are helpful later) and then do a PGCE.

That way, it will be at least 3 yrs for her degree and 1 for the PGCE - the degree can be done part time (which is usually 6 or 7 yrs - thus meaning her DC will be in school when she finishes).

I started uni when my DS was 22 months old; he had to go to a private nursery because the hours of study were so weird (ie only half days usually or some full days and I had to leave REALLY early to get there) - he loved nursery though and it helped him no end. He is now in school (he is 5 now) and in Sept I'm going to start my PGCE.

Good luck to your friend

it's very hard to get on a pgce though and that 1 year is very intense so she thought this would be a better route.

It could be - was just saying there are alternatives if she thinks the uni full time (9-5 5 days a week for 4 years...) will be too much (this way, she only gets 1 yr intense like that and 3 not which is why I did it - I think I'd go mad with that level of intensity for 4 years !)

my friend (a diff one) is doing the B.Ed over 4 years and she says its just like a normal degree and not really that intense cos it is spread it.

My friend is doing a B.Ed and he is in every day from 9-5. Then he has his placements for weeks at a time & preparation in the evenings for the next days teaching.. fairly intense I would say, but so worth it in the end!

what year is he in firefly? my friend is only in her 2nd year.

He's in 3rd year now, but he's been 5 days a week since he started.

I began a joint BA at the same time & even though mine is full time I'm in no more than 3 days a week for lectures & lots of study time at home.

He goes here It's in NI so probably different from where your friend might go, but it really is full on.

His wife took on a full time job & they have 2 young kids, but he says he sees them at weekends & is home in time to put them to bed most nights.
