Do you let your kids out in the rain?

So, weird one. We live in a lovely areas and have done so since my DC were born. 2yeqrs ago we had neighbours move in. Pleasant, quiet, not real concerns as such other than the have quirky parenting habits that are polar opposite's to us.

Its raining really heavy here and they are walking about the streets with no coats on? They are 4 and 7

They seem to have sooo much freedom and are allowed to cross main roads unattended and pretty much so as the wish.

Clothes/ uniforms always look unwashed and full of dog hair. And dinner is usually spilt all over them.

They once knocked my door at 10:15pm in the winter to ask if my son could come out to play? This was a school night !

Pyjamas seem to be allowed to
Be worn as daytime clothes at weekends. I dunno why I find this weird and odd but I do.

There's many more examples but I'll
Leave it there. Am I being weird for thinking it's all a little strange ?

Maybe I'm a snob and people like me are sick heads ?

It's water, not poison..! Children can get damp, wet or even soaked through and survive. That doesn't bother me particularly.

A 4 year old roaming the streets under the sole, er, 'supervision ' of a 7 year old alarms me though, especially if it's on a regular basis as your post suggests. That would have me looking out and considering contacting SS in case something is wrong at home.

The rain is not the issue here.

liveforsummer · 06/07/2022 12:56

Dd1 loves to run about on the rain without a coat. She'd come and get one if she wanted one. Don't see the problem. A few other concerning things going on there though. I'm surprised the rain you're focussing on?!

To answer your original question yes I do
As for everything else that sounds like neglect

maryleboneym · 06/07/2022 12:59

Knocking on door at 10:15pm is very odd. Most adults are in bed at that time . In wouldn't even text anyone at that time unless it's an emergency

DS’s school doesn’t allow the kids out at break times if the playground is wet, even if it isn’t raining.
Safety reasons.

Our school is the opposite. Always sending emails to say make sure dc have coats and appropriate footwear as they will go out in all conditions bar really extreme weather

kewgirl · 06/07/2022 13:12

Yes mine love to play football in the rain
A bit of water will not kill them
I do not want them to be wrapped up in cotton wool

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/07/2022 13:13

Are you worried about these children? Or just disapproving of their parents?

BiscoffSundae · 06/07/2022 13:17

It’s clear the way you’ve worded your thread why you are getting the comments you are getting, you shouldn’t have made it about kids playing in rain but kids out in the rain, in dirty clothes all the time, out at 10pm at night and crossing roads unsupervised is concerning, if you had worded it definitely you would have got different responses but people aren’t looking past the playing in the rain bit, all the other stuff is concerning.

Most of the individual things you mention wouldn’t bother me, but the combination of them paints a picture of neglect. I’d be speaking with their school or social services.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 06/07/2022 13:20

The rain isn’t the issue here is it?

makinganavalon · 06/07/2022 13:29

Yes to the playing in the rain as I live on West coast of Scotland and they'd never go out if afraid of rain! But in boots and puddlesuits/rain coats.

But unattended main road crossing for a four year old and 10.15 knocking on doors is a bit concerning.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/07/2022 13:51

This👆.

No worries about the rain .

@pimlicoanna idc that I don't know her...I love your mum.

My 12 year old had to rinse her hair under the garden hose this morning because our water tank ran out while she was in the shower. Do I get points for that? 😳

My two like to trampoline and swim in the rain. Doesn't bother me in the least. But 7 and 4 year olds being out on the street alone at 10:15 is an issue.

UsernameNowAvailable · 06/07/2022 14:47

I would call social services about these young kids being out unsupervised on main roads, and beyond 10pm.

The other things you say are concerning also but I would lead with the lack of supervision.
