Giving up dummy

DD has just turned 2 and up until now she has had a dummy at nap and bedtimes only but i had thought it was time to give it up. Reasons are it was getting really disgusting as she chucked it under bed with dust etc and would put it straight back in mouth. She is talking A LOT more now and don't want it to interfer with speech development. Although up until now she has only had it at sleep times her brother - 3 months has one as and when we think he needs it - she was beginning to want this too.
So yesterday we made a big deal about the dummy fairy coming - we put her dummy in a little box and sprinkled it with lots of glitter and stuck feathers and pom poms and other bits in the box - no going back now! We even put stickers on the box etc
Last night she cried when we put her to bed asking 'where's dummy'. i reminded her of what we ad done and eventually she settled. She got some white chocolate coins from dummy fairy this morning. Today at nap time she cried for her dummy again and i suspect didn't sleep, just messed about and banged in her bed.

Am i being a cruel mum and should i just give her it back and wait until shes older.
and advice appreciated.

It sounds like you've done it in a lovely way for dd... as it's been such a 'big deal' (fairies, buttons etc) I don't think you should go back to it.

She will get used to it, but there might be a few interuppted nights.

DD1 was just 3 when hers was binned...(had it for bed only). She soon got used to it, wasn't a hassle at all after the first 2 nights without it. Good luck

I have got to try and wrestle dd2's dummy from her she will be 3 at the end of March. She is a nightmare with it, refuses to take it out at times but when she is at playschool she will leave it in her bag all day without any hassle!
She has just been toilet trained and dd3 arrived 16 weeks ago so i didnt want to rock the boat whilst dd3 was still new incase she felt neglected!

my DS has just turned 2 as well but I've decided not to deal with the dummy until a bit later. According to what I've read, dummy only at lseeping times will not interfere with speech or anything else, so if you want to give it up then its your choice but no urgent need.

I agree with NNB given that you've already started down this route you should stick with it if you can.

OEM you might want to try limiting dummy use to bedroom only as a starting point.

should add DS knows dummy is only for use in the bedroom around sleep times.
