What clothes and shoes are trendy for 12 year old girls right now?

I’m planning on doing some shopping for an almost 12-year-old for clothes for the autumn and would be grateful for some recommendations. I would like her to feel like she fits in with the other children at her school.

Any reason you don't take her with you/ask her what she'd like?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/07/2022 05:39

I honestly wouldn't even try and choose clothes for my 12 year old anymore. She's very clear on what she will and won't wear, it would be a waste of time and money for me to choose!

She needs to choose her own clothes.
Plus by the autumn she'll have grown and possibly her tastes changed.

90s clothes are back. Leggings. Long T-shirts. Obviously it depends on the style your dd is into? My dd liked lots of different looks. I've bought her stuff I thought she would like. She didn't.

from what I can see from dc school: leggings/jeggings are out.

they wear loose track suit/skater style bottoms.
harrem type trousers short or long.

tight t-shirt or crop top with loose logging or colourful 'dad' dress shirt over.

lots of denim

white trainers or retro style canvas trainers.

I think it totally depends on their individual style, I wouldn't try and buy clothes for this age to be honest- most of it will probably end up returned!

LaTangerina · 01/07/2022 13:18

Pretty much most things from JD sports!

Does she want to wear the same clothes as other kids?

I'm assuming it's a child you don't know as you don't mention the style she already wears, or being able to ask her or take her with you, so I assumed a foster child or something.

My dd wasn't into trendy stuff, she's never followed fashion and dresses purely for comfort and from the moment she was able to give her own opinion she's choose jogger bottoms and baggy t shirt. They have school uniform at primary and secondary around us so at school they're all the same. She'd have really disliked being presented with a load of trendy clothes at that age as she'd already developed her own preferences.

Outside of school it seems to be a genuine mix. Recent party (my 12 year old niece) Some 12 years old are like mini adult women with the fake tan, full make up, fake nails, stiletto type heels, hair extensions and very grown up clothes and accessories etc whereas others are in leggings or joggers, T-shirts and trainers and a denim jacket.

My DC of that age would only wear what they’d chosen themselves. Sorry.

Does she want to wear the same clothes as other kids?

This is it in a nutshell, really. Don’t try to guess it based on what you think they might need/want (which is to ‘fit in’). It’s much more tribal than that - there isn’t one answer to what’s trendy as it depends on your friends, and that depends on the sort of person you are.

Lovemusic33 · 01/07/2022 16:51

I have written similar posts before. My DD’s have ASD and hate clothes shopping, they don’t really do the ‘fitting in’ thing and tend to wear what they think is comfortable, they don’t really care what others think but they do get bullied (especially eldest dd). They hate clothes shopping and often just wear the same outfit over and over or they have multiple of the same outfit.

Maybe OP’s situation is similar?

I have always wanted my DD’s to kind of fit in but as they have got older it’s got harder just to find anything they might want to wear due to sensory issues. Dd1 mainly wears jeans with elasticated waste and basic t-shirts, she likes slogan t-shirts mainly with left wing stuff on them (she’s a older teen now), dd2 mainly wears joggers and T-shirts, neither will wear leggings or dresses.

Singleandproud · 01/07/2022 16:56

DD is often found in my old jeans and camo shirt.
Jeans and t shirt from Qwertee (watch out for shipping)
Harem trousers and black vest top.

Shoes are generally vans or converse

Girls I teach are often in ripped jeans and cropped tops for mufti days or baggy supersized tops a couple of sizes too big.

You need to discuss with her what kind of fashion she likes. Nothing worse than buying a new wardrobe and your child not wearing any of it or your child interpreting it as you dictating how she should dress.

There's lots of variation on clothing styles.

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/07/2022 17:01

My DD picked her own clothes by that age.My sons were happy for me to buy for them and I would just buy inoffensive items eg jeans, hoodies et. that I had seen other boys wearing.
