Toddler rolling eyes when sleeping/waking up

Hello my 2.3yo had a nap today at usual but the shop we went in had a loud road works outside of it which woke him up and then he went back to sleep and had a very unsettled 20 minutes of very light sleep until he woke up.

When he woke up he stretched out and his eyes rolled back into his head twice. I was actually talking to a pharmacist at the time who was looking at him and she just said ‘has he just woke up?’ And I said yes and she was completely indifferent (which I guess could be reassuring) but it’s freaked me out. When he did it I said ‘hey are you okay?’ And he just just opened his eyes and said yes and started chatting away.

He’s been absolutely fine in every way. Could it be something to do with waking up / being in a very light sleep? He used to do it when he was a little baby but not noticed it for a long long time.

Hi, I’ve just come across this post. My sons has been doing the eye rolling episodes since he was about 9 months, he’s now almost 3. When he was 9 months I used to mostly see it in the high chair, hard blinks and eyes rolling upwards just for a second or 2 and can happen in clusters. He would do it on and off for a few weeks then I didn’t see it for months then it comes back. Now he’s older I don’t really see it when he’s eating, now I see it mainly when he first wakes up, sometimes when sunlight hits his eyes or in the bath of water goes in his eyes or sometimes if he doesn’t know / like a song, it’s like he gets overwhelmed. He’s had 3 EEGs, one of which was only about 2 weeks ago and the neurologist is unsure exactly what is causing it but believes it’s behavioural, like a tic as my son has suspected ADHD but to young to officially diagnose. He has also has his eyes checked and they seem fine. Please can you let me know if you have any further info / updates. I’m sure the neuro knows what he’s talking about but it’s good to hear other people’s experiences. Thank you x

Hey! What ended up happening here? I’ve noticed my 16 month old doing this when he wakes up from sleep occasionally. He rolls once usually and seems fine before and after. We’ve reached out to the doctor but haven’t heard back yet.

@Pen89ox @AT20 @wavynaes just wondering if you ever sorted out what this was? DD just turned two and twice in the last month I’ve seen her roll her eyes, once when she was falling asleep (v tired and was falling asleep in my arms) and once when she was waking up in the night (she usually sleeps through but woke up absolutely howling) . I didn’t see anything else at the time but it just struck me as a bit odd as I hadn’t noticed it before.

@wavynaes @pgtipsforme my son is now 4.5 and he just grew out of it. I v rarely see the odd roll now but it’s pretty much stopped after years of worrying! Take note of when it happens, if it is in repetitive places e.g car seat, high chair etc it may be Stereotypies which is developmental. I was told by the neurologist that if it was anything to worry about it would get worse, not improve and they would happen at anytime, not only in certain places like the highchair. I hope you get to the bottom of it for your little one. Try to catch a video for the GP if possible x
