Baby medicine supplies

Hi, our first is due any day and I realised we don't have any baby medicine/first aid supplies.
If I was going to order some stuff from Boots what would it be best to get, just in case?
Thanks!

You can't really give a newborn any medicine. Just get a digital thermometer.

Saline drops for blocked nose in the early days.

Digital thermometer.

Metanium nappy rash cream is unbeatable.

Cotton pads for cleaning eyes.

For a bit later: gripe water. Calpol, karvol, calprufen

Brilliant, thank you both. I did wonder if you could give them anything and good to know you can't really.

Will definitely add the thermometer to my list and the saline drops etc. I had no idea they still made gripe water, I remember my Mum having it when we were small.

When choosing a thermometer get one that says on the box how long the reading takes. It's hard to hold a thermometer in the armpit of a screaming sick baby for more than about 10 seconds and only after 10 months did I realise I just had a shit one and could get a faster one!

Also not strictly medicine but get a snot sucker too. Ours is a bulb Shape that you press in to create the suction (so you dont actually have to suck it yourself) it's great and used frequently

They mostly can’t have anything (unless prescribed) until they’re 3months. But you need calpol for the 2month injections. Baby Nurofen works well for bringing down temps once they’re old enough, but should never be given if there’s a possibility they have chickenpox. Get a good thermometer (I like the braun ear one). Yellow metanium cream is magic for nappy rash. Don’t bother with cradle cap treatments, if you end up needing something then coconut oil or head and shoulders shampoo works really well.
For teething I prefer to use Anbesol liquid.

Once they’re old enough for medication I recommend setting up a WhatsApp chat with the other parent called ‘baby name meds’ and anything you give them you message the dose. You can then see by the time stamps when they last had something and if you’re trading off care on the fraught nights when they’re ill you won’t accidentally overdose them, or you don’t have to wake your partner to check if they already have calpol etc.

Oh, and snufflebabe ointment and the calpol plug in are good for stuffy noses.
