How to help toddler with water infection?

Short version: DD (27months) has had a water infection since the weekend, is there anything I can do to give her relief?

Longer version: DD had been saying "wee hot" all day Sunday when she used the toilet and had 2 wee accidents (completely out of character), later that evening she had a temperature and she was really unsettled.

I took her to the docs on Monday morning, nurse saw her but she wasn't really presenting with any usual water infection symptoms at this stage and had been using the toilet fine that morning. Had to take a urine sample in which was a nightmare because she refused to wee all afternoon with the collection bag attached but finally got one at 4pm and rushed it to the docs - the nurse had told me they would dip it straight away in case she needed antibiotics but the receptionist told me to leave it with her and they would sort it when they could and let me know. I mentioned what the nurse had said but she repeated the same.

Tuesday I called after not hearing anything and I was told the sample had been sent to the lab because they'd seen something but hadn't had the results. I asked again about the antibiotics but was told to call back today.

Called back today at lunchtime only to find out they closed at midday for training so it's now going to be tomorrow before I can speak to them again and hopefully get some antibiotics for her.

Today she's been crying when trying to wee and constantly asking for the toilet only to not be able to go so just wondering if there's anything else I can do for her to help her through it. I've not had a water infection myself so other than giving her plenty of fluids I feel at a bit of a loss!

I'd be calling 111 tonight to be honest.

Is she still drinking plenty? Weeing in the bath can help as can tipping a jug of warm water down her pubic area when she is on the toilet/potty.

When I have UTIs I drink tonnes of cranberry juice and sit in a cool bath for as much of the day as possible.

I also get antibiotics at the very first time, because my doctors are not incompetent morons. I can't believe your GP hasn't issued a prescription. I'd be calling and going ballistic.

Another for cranberry juice.

I wouldn't be happy waiting this long for AB for a UTI mind esp at her age

Cranberry juice is supposed to prevent UTIs, not cure them. It's actually quite bad for the lining of your bladder and can irritate it even more.

Poor thing, I'd just give her water to drink (but not loads and loads so as to make her have to wee every ten mins as this also irritates an already unhappy bladder).

Let her wee in the bath and if she seems on pain afterwards try and get her to hold a hot water bottle on her bladder.

They really are horrible, I've been plagued by them over the years.

Antibiotics do tend to kick in quite quickly though which is a good thing.

She has been drinking plenty and has been weeing but not as many times as usual (I presume she's just holding it until she can't anymore).

Other than when she's weeing she's acting completely normal and apart from sunday and then today she'd not been in distress when weeing at all so I was starting to think I'd been a bit overzealous taking her to the docs especially as my main suspicion came from a 2 year old saying "wee hot" and having an accident. Whenever I've spoken to the receptionist at the docs they don't seem to be concerned about the length of time since our appointment and my mum (who has had a lot of UTIs) has confirmed that the docs usually do the same to her in terms of timescale so I wasn't sure what was normal and what to expect.

I'm annoyed that I've had to chase at every stage to get anywhere, but our docs are usually pretty good so I didn't want to seem a pain if this was just the normal process. You've all assured me that I'm definitely justified to be annoyed if they don't sort this out and get a prescription issued first thing. I will say I think the nurse I saw on Monday would have prescribed antibiotics straight away if DD had shown any symptoms at the appointment but in true toddler fashion she seemed perfectly fine when the nurse did all her checks. My suspicion is that the receptionists are the ones fobbing me off as this wouldn't be the first time I've had to push them, the nurse I saw on Monday did apologize that she probably wouldn't be there when I took the urine sample in as she was on holiday from the afternoon.

DD has gone to bed fine and fortunately hasn't had a temperature since Sunday so I'll ring the docs first thing in the morning and see what's happening. If she wakes up in the night I'll ring 111 to see what they say but I imagine they might just push me back to my GP.

Will definitely try the cool baths and cranberry juice in the meantime!

Definitely sounds like she needs antibiotics but D mannose is a life saver. It can be used to treat an active infection with a high dose or take a daily preventative dose. I used to suffer from them but since using it not at all. Similarly a friend who has a little girl of 9 uses it regularly as she used to get them all the time. You can order it same/ next day from amazon or get it from holland & barret. It’s incredible.

LunaNova · 30/06/2022 17:20

So I called the docs first thing to be told her sample was entirely normal so they wouldn't prescribe anything. I told them that she is crying in pain and the only solution they offered is for me to nip down again tomorrow with another sample.

At a bit of a loss what to do outside of this as she's reluctant to wee and is saying it hurts/crying when she tries to go.

Worried that if I take another sample in tomorrow it will be after the weekend before it's tested and we'll be in this position until then.

Do I ring 111 or will they push me back onto my docs?

Ring 111 and if they're not able to help you, take her to A&E. UTIs can turn nasty fast.

HSKAT · 30/06/2022 17:25

It needs treated asap

OurChristmasMiracle · 30/06/2022 17:33

I take nurofen when I have a bladder infection as it can cause inflammation of the bladder. Drink plenty. Cup of water poured over your intimate areas as you go wee can also help.

BruisedSkies · 30/06/2022 17:35

They should dip it straight away will be enough to prescribe antibiotics. Then they can also send it off. Have a look into D Mannose as well. It helps prevent them. I get the sweet cures one.

LunaNova · 30/06/2022 18:05

Spoke to 111 and they've pushed me back to GP, my mum has a spare sample bottle so she's going to bring it round to me so I can get a sample tonight and take it to the docs first thing. Going to refuse to leave until they dip it. Although I'm still not sure whether they will prescribe on this as when they dipped her last test they said it showed "something" but decided to wait for the lab result to come back before prescribing anything and since the lab result came back normal that scuppered that.

Fingers crossed we get somewhere soon.
