1 year in cloth but having a crisis

My DD (13 Months)has worn cloth nappies since birth with no trouble, but for the last 6 weeks has been getting horrible nappy rash - red welts, weeping, awful stuff. Only way I can get rid of it is to put her in disposables .

Have tried all the usual suspects: detergent residue, used white vinegar to sterilise any nasty bacteria, regular changes and have tried pretty much everything on her skin. She isn't getting very wet so it must be something with the nappies or her diet. I use fleece liners and have given silk ones a go too but no luck. As soon as it clears if I put her back in the cloth nappies it is back within half a day. Thought she was teething at first but no teeth and still a sore bum. Need some help before I give up, don't want to say goodbye to her lovely nappies but am starting to think I might have to just hope she's ready for potty training VERY early! At least I always know when shes ready to go - she assumes a squatting position ! Can get very embarrassing when we're at playgroup!

I could have written that thread myself!!
My DD is 14 months old and has been in cloths since birth with no trouble.
She too has suddenly developed awful nappy rash and it refuses to clear up unless I put her in disposables.
I came to the conclusion that this was due to the changes in her pooing habits.
Since she turned one year old and I weaned her, she has been eating more and therefore pooing more. Also, as she gets bigger, I was wondering whether the changes in her diet to more adult food were affecting the aciditiy/bacteria levels etc of her poo.
She now poos up to 6 times a day, so no matter how quickly and carefully I change her, she seems to poo again immediately and her bottom gets no time to recover by being clean and dry before it's pooed on again.

The last couple of days I have been giving her apple to eat as this makes her poo slightly more solid and therefore less likely to spread all over her bottom, also making it easier to clean with out rubbing etc.
This, along with slapping on large amounts of Sudocrem seems to have helped.

If anyone else has any better ideas about why we might be having this problem, I too would really love to hear them!!
My Dd is certainly not ready to potty train and I'm not ready to put her in disposables full time!

Have no idea!
I started exactly the same thread about 8 months ago, everyone posted their suggestions, both kids went back into disps for 4 months, have been back in cloth for about 4 months and the rash is not back.....yet.
Fingers crossed.

Lennied,
does your DD eat much citrus fruit?
One idea is that my DD started eating satsumas at just about the time that the rash started.
I haven't let her eat any this week and the rash has now just about gone. I happily put her back into her cotton nappies again today.
I wonder if the fruit were making her poo very acidic or something? Maybe it was irritating her skin.
Does anyone have any ideas about that?

BabyBuftersNappies · 16/01/2008 14:23

I agree with citrus stuff as orange juice is know for making girls sore.

Bananas give my 18 month old acid burn type rash as does most fruit?

RuthChan · 17/01/2008 00:23

That must be it then!!
My DD eats bananas, apples and other fruits with no problems, but the rash started just at the time she started eating satsumas.
It has also cleared up now that I have stopped her eating them.
Thanks everyone.
I'm so happy to have a daughter who's happily running around in her cotton nappies again!

Sorry for disappearing for a while there - and thanks for all your replies. She does eat citrus fruits but not that often really since they don't agree with me so I don't really buy them too much. Tried her nappies again yesterday and had the same result, red bum. Hmmmm. Think it must be her diet somehow - could it be that she is digesting food differently now that she is a bit older?

Could it be fungal? If it is, then you could try boil-washing the nappies, although you've probably tried that already.
