She did cooking but that ended due to lock down, and wouldn't like coding.

Drama? Chess?

Is it the team aspect of sports she doesn't like, or the physical activity? Climbing might be non-sporty enough?

Talipesmum · 27/06/2022 11:12

Board games, warhammer, dungeons and dragons, chess, theatre (our school runs a techy club as well as drama etc), music lessons?

She doesn't like drama as feels self conscious. Chess - she will say it's boring! She spends all her time on her phone or out with friends at the park - maybe the latter is enough but seems sad that she has no interests.

She did music and quit. She likes cooking, sewing and beauty but can't see any clubs around our way that covers those things.

Art club, rainbows, brownies

Beamur · 27/06/2022 11:17

Boxing
Climbing
Guides.
There are groups for adults knitting and sewing round here which happily let teens/youngsters join in.

Choir
Bell ringing

No advice here I'm afraid, but my DD11 is the same! So far she's tried football, basketball, a variety of dance classes and gymnastics. She has quit all of them after a term. She has stuck with a performing arts club, because it's very inclusive and they allow her to take small parts and/or help with tech and back stage stuff.
I'd really like her to have a more physical club, if only to get her off her phone a bit more...

eddiemairswife · 27/06/2022 11:20

Does she want to join a club, or is it that you want her to join one? There's nothing wrong with hanging out with friends.

SheWoreYellow · 27/06/2022 11:22

Mine did art, until recently, but was getting to be the very oldest there and feeling a bit out of place.

If there isn’t anything she wants to do I think it’s hard to push.

I’m taking the approach that she needs to:
have a tidy(ish) room
do some reading
do her homework
get off her phone an hour before bed
cook for us once a month

apart from that she comes out with us some of the time but mostly I’m happy for her to be with her friends.

Photography
Digital photo editing
Hip hop dance
Beading / jewellery making
Woodwork
Cake decorating

It's tricky finding something isn't it!

Goodskin46 · 27/06/2022 11:23

Art ?
Woodwork ?
Gardening ? (at my DC's primary they had sport everyafternoon- those that didn't want to participate did gardening - which I thought was lovely)

SisterFizz · 27/06/2022 11:23

How about St John Ambulance cadets? She could learn life saving skills while having fun.

That is lovely, she'd much prefer gardening!

She said that if it's something she's interested in she would, but very narrow interests. You are right tho, I'd like her to join a club or at least do some activity over the long summer hols. But she is sociable and enjoys walking into town or to the park with her friends so maybe I should just leave it at that, and do cooking/jewellery making etc with her at home

Something along the volunteering line: lifesaving, St John's Ambulance, police cadets

Unfortunately she’s hate anything like that but am hoping she does DofE and will have to do some volunteering then.
I have found a one day sewing course near us in summer hols so that’s something

this. I joined as a student and it was great fun, we got free entry to lots of local gigs, and there were a lot of interesting options such as ropes, climbing, orienteering, coastguard stuff.

there’s also the police cadets? Friend of mine had a kid she was worried about and said it made her.

otc/atc is also getting “cool” with the teens now, there’s also navy cadets if she likes the idea of water- sailing, rowing, paddleboarding etc.

i don’t see these suggested very often but every kid i know who’s tried it has got right into the community/camaraderie of it. Would one of her friends give it a go with her?

plus there’s also the careers aspect. I had quite a few uni mates had their fees paid by the OTC or whatever.

AgathaMystery · 27/06/2022 11:50

No phones here as I genuinely think they don’t help children branch out into the world. The phone and app companies want our children isolated, relying on their phones. Anyway…

locally we have:
drawing
pottery
tumbling
gardening
painting
woodwork

i have signed my DC up for a 2 days sewing workshop to learn to make a bag on a sewing machine. Sounds random but they love making stuff on my machine.

CountessOfSponheim · 27/06/2022 11:50

Guides -- won't be much use over summer hols but they do lots of bits of different things.

TherapistInATabard · 27/06/2022 11:58

Young Archaeologists Club? I help to run one and we often appeal to kids who have tried everything with no joy!

Blandie · 27/06/2022 12:25

If she enjoys spending time with her friends could she ask if one of them wanted to join a club together with her? Then they could pick just whatever suits them the best.

breathslowly7 · 27/06/2022 12:38

Thanks all, lots to think about here, very helpful to have your input 👍
