Do I bother discouraging bed time milk - or wait ... and wait... and wait... for ds to loose interest

ds is 4 next month. ADORES his milk - morning & evening limited to 2 cups in the morning and one cup at night - just before bed.

Obviously, he's still in nappies at bed time.

I'm not fanatical about getting him out of them, by any stretch, but assume that he ain't got a chance til he gives up his evening pinta.

We've tried encouraging earlier milk, but he ain't interested. Do I try a bit harder, or just go with the continued, milky, flow...?Any ideas for encouraging him to ditch the moo-moo juice?

I'd let him have it if he really wanted it. My youngest stopped his bedtime milk earlier but tbh I don't know how it happened and he has milk at breakfast and tea now. DS1 and DD have it at breakfast and at school and if they want it at tea, then too.

mine is 7 funny and still has morning and evening milk it's a good source of calcium and fat as he is a skinny malinki
he was out of bedtime nappies at 3 btw

DD1 is 5 and a half and still has milk at bedtime. I would say as long as it doesnt worry you, leave it, as long as he brushes his teeth afterwards, IMO its not a problem.

Shitemum · 15/01/2008 20:14

give him slightly less each night until it's not worth his bother. There are better sources of calcium.

ds1 was 4 in December, still has bedtime milk/milky drink and is still in night time nappies - I am just going with it

chankins · 15/01/2008 20:14

dd2 was also in love with her milk at bedtime - stopped it at about age 3 I think, might have been a bit before that, when we took nappies off at night - I just told her to have it downstairs instead, then gradually moved the time forward, and she seemed to forget. Taking nappies off was a disaster though, despite no drink she continued to wet the bed untl very recently and she is now nearly 4 !
Now I can't let her have a drink after dinner or she'll wet the bed.
Good luck

he will live till he's 80+
4 is still a baby
let him have what gives him comfort

funnypeculiar · 15/01/2008 20:15

why is milk a bad source of calcium, shitemum?

I don't think a bedtime milk drink is related to needing a nappy on at night.

Nemoandthefishes · 17/01/2008 21:46

let him have his milk. Agree dont think bedtime milk is related to dry nappy it is more their awareness. ds and dd1 both have milk at bedtime.

Nemoandthefishes · 17/01/2008 21:50

meant to add ds was out of nappies at 2.5yrs and dd1 is just 2 it is just when they were both aware of their bladders so are able to get up to use toilet.

JingleyJen · 17/01/2008 21:52

DS1 has bed time milk will be 4 in April. has been out of nighttime nappies since he was just over 2. Don't think the 2 are related.

DD had a tummy bug recently and the advice from the doc was no dairy. As it lasted a few days, we just didn't restart the milk at bedtime routine and she hasn't asked for it since. Maybe you could try this next time you LO has a tummy bug ? Not wishing illness your way or anything.....
