Hi I’m exclusively bottle feeding my 6 week old she has always been a pain to feed and is occasionally sick. She was getting much better but then caught a cold and now she won’t feed at all or will have 1oz every 12 hours I have to squirt what I can into her mouth and get her to swallow somehow I’ve managed to get by for now it’s been going on for well over a week now. Been to doctors and got absolutely no help. Really struggling and just don’t know what I can do

Does she still have a cold? I found when my DD did feeding her in the bathroom with the shower running so it was all steamy helped her breathe through her nose and take the bottle.

Help123412 · 25/06/2022 07:51

She is still coughing loads and is pretty chesty. Whatever I do manage to feed her she usually brings up with coughing too. I will give feeding her with the shower on a try thankyou.

Oh you poor thing, it’s so hard when they’re tiny and have a cold because they can’t breathe when they suck. Can you clear her nose before feeding time? Hang in there, it can feel like forever when you’re in it but it really does pass x

Her nose seems ok tbh.. it seems to be the coughing more than anything else. Cannot wait for it to pass feels like there is no end in sight at the moment. I’m hoping it doesn’t go on for another week

Aw gosh she’s so small, it must be very hard. I’m sorry, I don’t know. But like the previous poster I have been told that steam from showers can be helpful.

Is the baby still making plenty of wet nappies? How much weight have they lost? Sorry OP it’s so difficult when they are poorly.

Juniper74 · 25/06/2022 08:10

Is she having wet nappies? Sounds like she could possibly have bronchiolitis if she’s coughing a lot. How is her breathing?
If she’s still having such small amounts of milk I would take her to A&E to be honest. Definitely needs to see a Dr again if her feeding is so reduced.
Hope she’s well again soon.

bloodywhitecat · 25/06/2022 08:23

I would go to A&E, an ounce every 12 hours is really worrying.

Help123412 · 25/06/2022 08:28

Yeah she is probably 1 wet every 6 dr said that aslong as she doesn’t go 12 hours without a wet one then that’s ok… the doctor also said If I take her to A&E they will put us in a room and I’ve to try get her to feed using a syringe which is what I’m doing at home. They won’t give her IV fluid unless she goes 12without a wet nappy or is showing signs of dehydration which she isn’t (thank god) I don’t know wether to just go tbh now…

her chest is a lot better than it was a few days ago it’s the cough more than anything which makes her bring her milk back and just so reluctant to feed

I’m also a bit reluctant to go to A&E as I have a 1 year old too and I have no one to watch him really if I do go

Phone 111 then as they can advise more and possibly make an appointment for you instead. When did you last see the GP?

Help123412 · 25/06/2022 08:43

I phoned 111 and they just referred me to GP. I went on Thursday to see them and that was that advice i got… I just wish she would feed.. do you know how long bronchitis lasts for? My DS never had a cold when he was this tiny I managed to get him to about 10 months old before he caught one (luckily) and he was only difficult to feed for a day or two and was having solids so was much more manageable and less stressful

You sound worried. I would ring 111 and get her seen and assessed by a doctor for dehydration. She’s very little and it’s been going on now.

BattenburgDonkey · 25/06/2022 08:50

Was it today that you phoned 111? I think the different is that it’s prolonged not feeding now, which over time can become more serious as the baby could loose too much weight, she’s still very tiny. A&e or another doctor can weigh the baby and see how much weight they’ve lost and possibly give better advice.

Help123412 · 25/06/2022 09:04

Will try 111 again thank you
