Hi Sasa15, My DH is Greek and we decided to speak a mixture of both English and Greek in our household....this is the best time to learn a language, and it hasn't caused any confusion with our children.

I speak to my dd in French most of the time, even in the presence of people who only speak English, it's only when I want them to be involved in our conversation that I will speak English to dd. Otherwise what I do sometimes is say something to dd in French and then say it in English for the benefit of the English speakers. HTH!

Hi mediagirl,

I see you are an English/Greek household. Me too!
My husband and I are trying for a baby and have a predicament regarding name choices as his parents expect us to name our baby after one of them, as in the Greek tradition (you can see the thread about it under baby names!)... What are your experiences of this as a mum to ango-greek babies? It is something which is bothering me as I am really not keen on either of my husband's parents' names.

Many Thanks,

Mollie

Continue to speak Italian to your baby and English to dh's English friends.

You will find you have often got 2 simulataneous conversations going, but no matter.

I speak French to my daughter no mateer who else is present. If necessary, I will then paraphrase for the benefit of anyone else present but normally it does not concern them anyway.

I mix languages shamelessy. Particularly as my dcs are old enough to have mates round, so often conversations do concern everybody at the same time. In fact, when I was speaking Swedish to ds yesterday trying to find out the facts of what had happened to his furniture his mates got really worried as they thought he might snitch on them/give a slanted version of events: I decided it was fairer to conduct the inquisition in a language everybody could understand, so no undue suspicions would fall anywhere.
