DD (almost three) v constipated and upset. Hasn’t passed properly in a week, apart from one small deposit this week. She is in a lot of pain and discomfort. She pushed out suppository, did DH do it wrong? Went to doctors but they told us to wait it out. Tips! Struggling to deal with it while balancing caring for 12 week baby and DH going to a stag do this weekend so is going to be a nightmare alone

Get some lactulose over the counter. A week is a long time bless her

Pearshapegnome · 24/06/2022 20:15

She’s having such massive tantrums we can’t get medicine down her

Would she try prunes? Ella’s kitchen do a pouch one she might quite like.

Hide it in orange juice or a smoothie. Honestly a week is a long time she's going to end up impacted.

Tiepose · 24/06/2022 20:21

I got an appointment for ds5 through 111 for constipation. Lactulose should be prescribed for children, I think. We are now on quite a high dose of paediatric movicol (which leads to pain free stools - you also need a prescription for movicol).

Ella’s pouches are a good shout, as are Weetabix and bran flakes.

Good luck. This is so horrible for them.

Pearshapegnome · 24/06/2022 20:27

i think She already is impacted but the paediatrician just prescribed laxatives and to wait it out. She’s had some movicol sachets but not the full dose for the day. She’s already been on movicol for two days but no change

The only other thing is can think of after movicol is pure orange juice, may help or may not... happened too my niece and she ended up having to go to hospital so if no change by tomorrow I'd deffo try 111 or even a&e if they fob you off, when it happened to niece she had gone 9 days without going properly and she's still on movicol daily 3 years later! Use your mummy instincts, if you aren't happy take her x

My daughter (3) suffers from occasional constipation. I give her prune, pear or pineapple juice mixed in with her milk/water and it works.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 24/06/2022 21:48

Suppositories and lactulose never worked for our son, it took Movicol to get him moving - and we'd have to dose him for at least two days before there was any action.

Beachsidesunset · 24/06/2022 22:00

Cloudy apple juice, lots of it. Also try again with the suppository - it's the only thing that worked with my 2 year old. Cuddle her for a while, until she really feels the urge to push, it should work.

Movicol is not a laxative. It’s a stool softner. It works by keep water in the bowel so poo doesn’t become dried out and hard. None is of the movicol is absorbed by the body. If she is impacted it will take a couple of days.

You can make movicol up according to instructions and then add it to whatever she will drink squash, hot chocolate or whatever you need to give her to get it into her.

The ERIC website is really useful.

Careful with foods like wheatabix as they can make things worse.
