Daytime sleeping options

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on daytime sleeping options please. I have an 8 week old and up until now he's slept in the bassinet attachment of the pram for daytime naps (we keep the pram in the living room) but he's almost outgrown it as he's very tall. I'm looking for ideas of where he can sleep during the day. I have the following restrictions:

  • It needs to be raised off the floor as we have a dog who likes to lick given the opportunity
  • he's just started rolling over so I think that rules out Moses baskets
  • it needs to be at least 90cm long, ideally more than that, so he doesn't outgrow it in the next few weeks
  • I don't want to bring him upstairs to his cot for every daytime nap as sometimes I want to watch TV or spend time with the dog while he's napping, and he's also a difficult sleeper so I want to be able to put him somewhere in the living room and just grab half an hour nap on the sofa when I can not have the pressure of moving him upstairs and hoping he doesn't wake etc
  • we were bought a travel cot without a bassinet attachment and it's too deep to easily lift him in and out, I nearly fell while holding him when I tried it. We could buy another one with a bassinet attachment but they seem so uncomfortable with their thin, hard mattresses, but maybe this is the best option?
  • ideally not too expensive!

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

A play pen? Then he can play in there when awake as I know sometimes it is useful to separate them from dog and then sleep in there as well? You can get the ones where you shape the “fence” according to the layout of your room.

I would have bought a playpen if I had had a dog with a young baby.

Thanks. Do you mean that he can just sleep on the floor of the playpen? That doesn't seem very comfortable for him? I suppose I could move the bouncer into the playpen so the dog couldn't get to him when he's in the bouncer.

Also, just to add, I don't want it to seem like the dog is remotely aggressive, he's the most sweet and gentle dog you can imagine, I'm just very careful and don't leave them alone together as you can never be too careful with a newborn.

Buggy with a lie-flat seat? You're less restricted in length that way.

Travel cot.

I still used the Moses basket at that age - 8 weeks is very young to be rolling!

What does he sleep in at night? Is it a full size cot or snuzpod type thing? Could you bring it downstairs?

If you have a Moses basket already I would just put him in that for a few more weeks and then you can do the cot with the monitor on or the pram.
Rolling from front to back during tummy time or something isn’t really rolling. The risk with bassinets/baskets/the high setting on a crib is them rolling and sitting and having the strength to climb! I don’t think you have anything to worry about with an 8 week old in a Moses basket.

We do have a pram attachment that can lie flat, he can be strapped in so maybe that's safe? I was thinking it wasn't as safe as it doesn't have sides but I suppose it it's safe enough to be used out and about then it's safe enough for him to sleep in...

Maybe a travel cot with a bassinet attachment would be the best option.

He actually rolled for the first time last week when he was seven weeks! I couldn't believe it! He's only rolled from his front onto his back, I very much doubt he could roll from his back onto his front, so a Moses basket is probably ok for a couple more weeks at least but it doesn't seem worth buying one when we don't know how long we'll be able to use it.

We did a combo of the pram with the seat in the most reclined position and our tripp Trapp highchair also had a newborn pod.

Thanks that's really helpful! I think I'll just keep him in the Moses basket for now then and keep an eye on the rolling and whether he looks like he might sit up over the next few weeks.

It makes sense, I just read not to use them once your baby can roll and didn't really think about it logically!

I wanted to avoid carrying the Moses basket and stand downstairs every day but it's probably very wasteful to buy another one just to avoid that.

A tiny love baby rocker could be a good option, we got a lot of use out of it as it can also be put into a sitting position, I think DD was about 1 when we stopped using it so much. It also has straps and vibrates with music so keeps them entertained and soothed a bit.
