Methanium. The be all and end all?

This is my second attempt to post this message, so here goes....According to my dd's nursery and MN Methanium is the wonder stuff for sore bottoms.
However, everytime I have taken dd's nappy off after using it her bottom looks worse. Last night dd cried as I put her into the bath it was so sore.
Personally, I like to use Camomile tea but dd's nursery nearly laughed at me when I said this. So as not to be labelled wierdo hippy mummy I went along with metanium.
Today I have asked the nursery not to use it, just vaseline. I did this last night and it definately looks better this morning.
This is the second time I have tried metanium and I still don't like it. It's horrid.
Anyone else find the same?

It does work for lots of us MrsD, but it also has a strong active ingredient and I guess it is that which is not agreeing with your poor little dd. It pongs and it stains, I do agree
If you have found vaseline helpful and like the idea of camomile, have you thought of trying Kamillosan? We used it once on dd and it was highly effective.

Could it just be that the Metanium adheres to the sore bits, just making it look worse?

sanchpanch · 24/11/2004 13:44

hi, mrs doolittle
i have found this cream fantastic whenever my daughter has nappy rash, cleared it up very quickly,
you are supposed to only put a very thin layer on, so you can still see the skin through the cream, they may be putting to much on or maybe you little girl cant tolerate something in it?

it didn't really work for us (but has for friends who swear by it). For DS1 kamillosan was best, for ds2&3 drapolene was best.

kamillosan is great for sore noses as well

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 13:45

Thanks for that Marina. I was wondering about that but it is quite expensive, so your experience helps Marina

Ahah, here's your post.

I think it depends on the bottom! I find metanium brill, but like you, my friend doesn't and uses stuff from Earth Friendly Baby (which I tried and found no good).

Each bottom is unique I suppose .

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 13:48

Hi Puff
The nursery have experience using it and it's when she comes home I think her bottom looks worse.
Her normallly beautiful little bottom looks so sore

That's what my friend found.

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 13:52

Ooops metanium. I have spelt it incorrectly.

MrsD, I posted on this a couple of weeks ago. DD screamed everytime Metanium was put on her sore bits and someone on here (sorry, can't remember but the advice was great!) mentioned that if the skin is broken it can be very stingy.
My HV (I know they're not popular but this time it was spot on) suggested a cream called Drapolene and it worked wonders. It is an antiseptic nappy rash cream available at the chemist. It was soothing and worked very quickly. I now have tubs and tubes of all sorts of stuff and Drapolene works every time.
HTH.

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 13:54

Thanks Rowlers hadn't thought of that.
What about this new one form Roche. What is it? Bep.. something?

I have always found that metanium works, except 1 time I found that nothing at all worked (metanium, kamillosan, sudocrem, vasoline & 1 other cream I forget). Turned out dd had thrush, so canestan quickly cleared it up.

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 14:06

I'm sure it's not thrush. I know what that looks like. Probably the meatanium is too strong methinks

Marina · 24/11/2004 14:14

Bepanthen, MrsD. Didn't work for us!
We found what turned out to be "infective nappy rash" unresponsive to sudocrem, Kamillosan or metanium, and the GP prescribed a very mild antibiotic ointment, Fucithalmin. Cleared it within 24 hours. Maybe your dd has that rather than thrush?

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 14:17

Marina, what were the signs of infection?
Dd's sore bottom just looks red, it's much less so without the metanium. Just this morning it was only a couple of patches.

OP posts:
Marina · 24/11/2004 14:19

Nothing very obvious, just an angry-looking rash which did not respond to creams as a slight case of ordinary rash would. We felt very guilty about not getting the Fucithin (that's the correct name I think) straightaway but it really wasn't especially painful looking. No open soreness or anything like that.

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 14:22

It's Fucidin, a topical antibiotic.

OP posts:
Marina · 24/11/2004 14:23

THAT's the stuff. Active ingredient fucithalmic acid, excuse my addled brain.

MrsDoolittle · 24/11/2004 14:27

I wouldn't feel guilty Marina. I wouldn't use Fucidin straightaway either. I don't think anyone would.

a couple of times I found an antiseptic cream like savlon worked best of all.

popsycal · 24/11/2004 14:31

it is amazing stuff
