7 Month old standing in her cot issue…

Our 7 month old has recently discovered she is able to stand up in her cot… in her sleepbag!
We have the cot at the lowest level of course however tonight when I went to feed her she was standing hanging onto the top rail but when i went in the room just LET GO and fell backwards- thankfully I managed to muster some 2am energy and catch her before she hit her head on the back of the cot/wall but now I’m awake thinking of there is a solution to “this!”

As happy as I am she is clearly developing she seems too young and too unstable to be doing this! Is it just one of these things, I’m sure there will be many, that I have to accept and get used to the risk of or am I missing a trick here?
(She also at times appears to get “stuck” and unable to take her hands from the top bar to sit back down/go to sleep so starts crying till we lie her down!)

Thank you in advance and apologies about the awful spelling/diction… it’s 3am!

Bigger cot, so that if she falls back her head only hits the pillow or mattress.

Higher cot so she doesn't get stuck and can only grip the side bars.

This is babies, of all ages go through this stage. Mine one managed to climb out and get himself wedged between his cot and the nursing chair. Is there anything close to the cot that will help with the step up and over the rail. Otherwise lower cot with higher rail and scatter cushions on the floor just in case they do manage to get out and fall. Its as scary as ...

Ooo another thought - swaddling?

It's a phase they go through and there's not much you can do. Definitely too old to swaddle as suggested above, that's unsafe as soon as they can roll onto their stomach. Mine regularly made awful noises banging her head against the walls of the cot but never seemed bothered by it so I think it sounded worse than it was?!

Hmmm tough one. My just turned 8 month old has begun pulling to stand in his playpen during the day but not yet at night thankfully. Would she be any more steady if she had one of those sleeping bags with the feet on them? Hopefully this will be a short lived issue while she's developing this skill. Try and give her plenty time to practice during the day. Don't swaddle, completely unsafe at this age!

It's just a phase they have to go through and she will be fine! You can't be there watching all night to stop her getting up and you can't safely put anything in the cot to make it more padded so you just have to go with it. She will bump her head sometimes and it can sound awful, but it's a short phase and she will soon be steadier on her feet!

We turned our cot so that when (not if) they always fell into the cot sides and avoided a hard wall. We also removed perimeter items that made life easier for us but would potentially assist escape!!!!

Aww bless what a cutie!!!

they all go through this stage (except any who sadly won't be standing solo).

banging her head on the cot bars won't hurt her, just pull it away from the wall.

she's in a sleeping bag, so getting over the bars will be a challenge for a good while yet.

getting 'stuck' standing won't last long, just put her hands on the rails and help her/show her how to slide her hands down, she won't be 'stuck'/ crying for help for very long, she'll soon get the hang of it,

I know sisters who walked at 7 & 9 months respectively. Looked so odd, but so cute.

She'll very quickly learn not to do it. Sometimes we can't find solutions for every thing they do but they solve the problem themselves through their own development.

DockOTheBay · 20/06/2022 07:11

She won't bang her head very hard as she's only falling from her own small height and will just go floppy as babies do, not try to stop her fall. I imagine she will quickly learn that when she does it she hurts her head so will learn not to do it

Thanks all so far! Had a discussion with OH this morning who thought of a fairly genius idea of using the travel cot as it is mesh opposed to bars so her falling back she won’t hit her head off anything hard. However I’ll keep her in her own cot just now and always have it for back up! Thanks again!

Also, babies tend to fall on their bums not the back of their heads! She'll be fine

pastabest · 20/06/2022 09:54

This is a stage nearly every baby goes through. They learn how not to fall and bash their heads by falling and bashing their heads a few times.

One of mine used to bash her head off the cot bars just for shits and giggles.
