im stuck...... i need to prepare and present a 10 min talk on a subject. Im a bit stuck as what to choose.
im on a 2 year access to health careers course so i suppose i should choose something health/social related.
what would you find interesting to listen to for 10 mins?
im quite prepared to search for info on internet if someone can suggest an interesting 'topical' topic.
thanking you

How about the consequnces of Bullying and inititives to combat bullying. There's loads of stuff oon this at the moment

tiptop · 24/11/2004 11:51

I agree with amynnixmum. Bullying is very topical atm. There was a discussion on this on a Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 the other day. Good luck with your presentation.

Nutcracker · 24/11/2004 11:55

Hi emma, when we did our presentations I did Asthma, it went o.k but i didn't feel it was interesting enough.
My friend did haead lice, and amongst others there was domestic violence, excema and anxiety.

Bullying is a good one, or how about Autism, or Vacinations, drug abuse.....

Just thinking off the top of my head really.

tiredemma, Have just done an essay on this topic so if you want to do it I could email you a copy to help with your research.

tiredemma · 24/11/2004 12:10

please amynnixmum, if you dont mind, i hadnt thought of bullying, my email is [email protected]. thanks alot.

hi nutty- those have all been "taken" by the other students!!!
i would do drug abuse but i have found that from the problems i had with my brother and his drug addictions, that i have a more symapthetic view to drug users ( who are looking for help and cant get it). from conversations i have had with people on my course, they have one opinion and one opinion alone about drug addicts and its likely to get very heated!!
thanks for the ideas though- im considering bullying- poverty in UK - and maybe domestic violence. But the bullying one stands out- i know that the students would find that one interesting especially as a lot of them have kids at school.

tiredemma - emailed it earlier - you should have it by now - please let me know if it didn't get to you and I will try it again.

Hulababy · 24/11/2004 17:20

Bullying has just been in the news. BBC had an article on it - 1 on 5 parents have children who have been or who are bullied at school. Had lots of info, plus graphs of statistics. Might be useful maybe?

if you change your mind tiredemma i would think that your presentation on drug use/abuse could really have an effect on how your classmates think. i would find somebody speaking from an experienced viewpoint like this really interesting. if they are going into health careers too they need to get out of a rigid mindset at some point. but fair enough if you don't want to be the target!!

amynnixmum · 25/11/2004 19:34

acnebride has a point. I spent 4 years working in a drug/alcohol rehab so like you tiredemma i tend to be sympathetic rather than condemning about their situation and feel that what most of them need is help and support and not prison. However you may have a problem getting them to hear your pov if they have already made their minds up. When i first started at the rehab loads of people that i knew were really sceptical (i'm not an addict myself and didnt know anyone who was before I started work). The only person who really did an about turn in his opinions was dh (previously of the "a bullets too good for them" brigade) and I think thats really only because he got to know some of the staff and residents through me. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm a midwifery student and I too have presentation to do, but in february.

Think about current public health issues and local and national initiatives. If you're interested in this website then you might be interested in the pregnancy side of things like me! SureStart is a good initiative to present on, smoking in pregnancy, domestic violence and obesity are also contemporary issues.

As for me, I'm doing mine on stress incontinence and the pelvic floor! Have to devise a leaflet. Any ideas for a tagline?!

Also, do you have access to ovid on the athens webiste which is a database of thousands of health related articles journals? Ask your college. Saves a lot of trawling around libraries.

tiredemma · 27/11/2004 14:17

thanks for all of your suggestions, and extra thanks to ammynixmum for taking the time to email your essay to me.
i have decided after much tooing and frowing ( and pulling fave ideas from a hat) to do - child poverty in the UK.
i have found loads of info and facts on it and have managed to intertwine it with information on sure start.
thanks again everyone.
