Reusable baby wipes? Can I use on baby's bum?

Considering buying reusable baby wipes.

I checked out cheeky wipes. However they seem very expensive. Little gubbins do a kit on Amazon for a fraction of the price. Would these do the job?

Little gubbins has white cotton cloths for dirty bums. Won't these get stained very quickly? Am I being squeamish thinking that it's a bit gross putting them in the washing machine?

Yes you can use them on baby bums, we did. We also used cloth nappies. So no, they did not get stained. We simply dropped them in the nappy pail with the dirty cloth nappies and washed the wipes and nappies together. You can look up how to wash cloth nappies and wipes in your washing machine in a way that is hygienic and still safe for sensitive bums.

I found fleece squares best- they wash and dry really fast, come in great colours, and don't stain.

Eco wise, a recycled fabric that's not going to shed micro plastics is better.

Bamboo is great.

Stains are actually very easy to wash out with the appropriate amount of work. You rinse most of the dirt down the drain and rub the material against itself to get the worst of it out. Then leave it to soak in a tub of water mixed with soda crystals until you're doing laundry. I used an old tub of popcorn (obviously empty!) to soak my stuff and I had very little stains if you do a good job.

I never used it, but my mum swears by Nappy San. She never had staining (of course this was 30-40 years ago so don't kbow what it's like now). You can get it in tesco

Thanks all. I think I'll stick with just using them for hands and face for now. Sounds like a lot of work unless using cloth nappies also

we did use cloth maps but I bought a load of dark grey flannels that we used to use. I’d rinse them if particularly minging else just put them straight into the washing machine to wash in the next wash.

Still going years later, but only saved a fortune on wipes but saved so much from landfill. No extra work at all

Reusables wipes are brilliant. So much more effective than disposables - you can do with one reusable what it takes 3 or 4 disposables to do as they actually clean away and don't just smear around.

We used Cheeky Wipes ones with DC1 and have them all set to go again for DC2! We had coloured ones but never noticed any staining on them.

Simonjt · 16/06/2022 13:24

We use flannels rather than reusable wipes as they’re cheaper and we find they last longer. They’re not stained, but if they were it wouldn’t matter, after all something wiping an arse doesn’t need to look pretty.

If you chose not to put anything in the washing machine thats had poo on you’re going to get through so so many clothes, pants and bedsheets in the next few years!

AmbushedByCake · 16/06/2022 13:24

I used the same pack of cheeky wipes for both my children's bums and I still use them now for various things. They're brilliant. Clean far better than disposable wipes which just smear the shit around. No staining.

savehannah · 16/06/2022 13:30

It doesn't matter if they are stained but they usually aren't. If you're bothered, just hang white ones out in the sunshine it bleaches them clean.

But I'm a cloth nappy mum, I can't quite get my head round using disposable nappies and washable wipes. Just go all washable!

People make it sound more complicated than it needs to be. We never soaked or used anything other than detergent. Fleece liners mean the poo just falls off in the loo. Place in lidded bucket. Then just chuck in the washing machine and hang out to dry. Super easy.

mrsfoof · 16/06/2022 13:32

Change baby in bathroom. Wipe their bum with loo roll to remove the worst of the poo (and dispose in loo). Then use washable wipes for a more thorough clean.
They don't stain if you hang outside to dry. The sunlight bleaches out any stains and also sanitises them.

Yes - flannels are great. IKEA does a cheap pack of 10 in the baby / child section.

bakewellbride · 16/06/2022 13:39

We use cloth nappies and wipes and they are brilliant! Cheeky wipes are SO good at cleaning poo compared to single use, I could never go back. Using them on my second baby and not a single stain.

Try Vinted for second hand if the price is putting you off.

Esssa · 16/06/2022 13:43

Aldi mamia reusable wipes are really good for faces or bums. Nice size, thick enough but not too thick that you can't feel what you are doing or get in the creases. I cloth bum too so they are far easier, and more effective than disposable ones.

carefullycourageous · 16/06/2022 13:57

Just cut an old towel into squares. Or old t-shirts.

Very cheap, very easy. Pre-soak then wash.

Flowersinamilkbottle · 16/06/2022 14:10

We used the same set of cheeky wipes for both children. No staining and we are still using them as flannels and wipes around the house 8 years later with no signs of wear. They are great.

QueenLagertha · 16/06/2022 17:38

@Simonjt I usually rinse and soak poo covered clothes. I just meant I can't be bothered doing this for bum wipes too.
I've ordered a pack to try. Have just had my second and last baby so I don't want to spend a lot. My first is starting school so he won't really need them. I do wish I'd tried them and reusable nappies first time around.

Using cotton wool and warm water on babys bum at the minute. Wipes are useless

Small flannels from the pound shop or similar are just as good

AegonT · 17/06/2022 21:11

Poo stains come out in sunlight on the line. But we rarely have stains. We wet them under a tap and wash them with the nappies. We use white ones for bum and coloured ones for faces/hands (those are washed with our clothes).

Caspianberg · 18/06/2022 13:24

We use cheeky wipes. You just need the wipes, not a kit. Just under tap and use.

I think they have been a bargain tbh. We have 40 wipes (£30 ish), and have been using every day for bum, face, hand for over two years.

wipes all white still. We also use washable nappies which are also white and after washing are also still as white as new

QueenLagertha · 18/06/2022 13:28

Wipes arrived! DH used to clean older DS up after his messy lunch. He was impressed!

Absolutely this.
for wipes, I just used a big pile of flannels from Ikea.

lorisparkle · 18/06/2022 13:35

We used mini muslin cloths when dc were babies and then we bought the packs of cheap ikea flannels when ds1 was an older baby/toddler. Initially had colour coded set for face vs bums. Ds1 is now 16 and the last few ikea flannels are being transferred from the dining table to the cleaning cupboard. An amazing investment!

Hardbackwriter · 18/06/2022 13:37

We've used the same Cheeky Wipes kit for two children and they're not stained. All we do is put them in the tub that comes in the kit with the scented oil after using (clearly you could recreate this with any tub, though you do probably want one with a lid), then when that's full/we're running out of clean ones put the whole lot in the machine on their own and do a 15 minute rinse cycle before adding the rest of the load (we do them with something else that goes in on a long hot cycle, like bedding or towels, and add some Dettol laundry cleanser). We found that if we didn't do the rinse first they made the load smell a bit musty.

We only use disposable baby wipes when out and about and every time I do I'm astonished again by how crap they are compared to the reusable ones - it's just really hard to get the actual poo off them with disposables!

We don't use reusable nappies because I tried them and didn't get on with them, and found them a lot of extra work. I genuinely don't find that with the wipes.
