When does it stop?? The grunting?

Hi all
I'm currently laying in bed listening to my 3 week old DD grunting away; like she has been all night! I can't get my brain to switch off from the noise, I keep thinking she'll need me in a second. I remember the same with my DS.

What I can't remember is when does it end?? When do they sleep lovely and quietly and peacefully?

Ahhh sympathies OP. Newborns are so noisy in sleep. Dawn especially bad from memory. No solution but it passes quickly and whilst it won't help your thread brought back many happy memories of my children when tiny.

I thought you were going to ask about a teenager. Sorry no help on this.

I'm lying next to my 10 year old listening to him grunting Blush

It starts again when they're 9 from experience.

When I go and check on my 4 year old DS it's so serene and calm in his room. No squirming or grunting at all. It's very tempting to crawl into bed with him and savour the peace and leave my DH and DD with their noises (DH a snorer too)

Ha I thought you were going to say your teens grunts rather than replies (and the answer would have been in a year or two)!

TiredInPerpetuity · 16/06/2022 09:29

I'll make the most of the years between grunty newborn and grunty teenagers when they arrive Grin

I think it was around 3 months for my DD. I used to leave her with DH, who didn’t mind the piglet noises, and sleep downstairs!

Songoftheseas · 16/06/2022 09:57

Oh I feel for you OP - my DD was a grunter and also used to thrash around in her cot, I thought it would never end and nearly went insane with the sleep deprivation! For us it started to improve dramatically when she reached around three months and disappeared completely when she was four months. I hope things quieten for you soon 💐

Cafeaulait27 · 16/06/2022 10:14

I put earplugs in, can still hear crying etc but it muffles the grunts! I can’t remember when the grunting stopped, maybe about 8 weeks?

TiredInPerpetuity · 16/06/2022 11:22

I can cope 3 months I think Confused It's the dramatic gasping, makes me so on edge. Sleeps like a glorious angel in the daytime in comparison.

It's a good job these babies are bloody cute

All my teenagers grunt.....

Cafeaulait27 · 16/06/2022 15:22

I remember as I’m a FTM I used to think he was dying whenever he made a noise. I had no idea it was normal!

PoTayToes80 · 16/06/2022 15:31

Ours is 4 months and is a pretty quiet sleeper now. I think he slept much more peacefully by about 12 weeks.

Herejustforthisone · 16/06/2022 16:26

That noise is why my baby went in their own room at three months. Noisy little piglet.

shivawn · 16/06/2022 19:45

My baby never grunted but I think I would have preferred grunting to the silence. I used to lift my head off the pillow to check he was okay a hundred times before falling asleep!

Me too , the teenage grunting is the worst . I miss the baby grunting followed by the farts. 😁

keeprunningupthathill · 16/06/2022 20:09

It's on and off forever. Well until at least 7 which is how old my eldest is.

keeprunningupthathill · 16/06/2022 20:13

You'll never sleep normally again btw. It gets slightly better but I was awake all last night as my three year old has a cough/croup and my seven year old felt sick so I was on listening for puke and coughing on tenterhooks even when I was asleep.

addler · 16/06/2022 21:35

Some are definitely noisier than others!

Have you tried using a white noise machine? We had that and then I ended up moving DS's bassinet to the foot of our bed instead of right next to me and that helped dull the grunting and snorting a bit.

TiredInPerpetuity · 17/06/2022 07:01

@addler we do use white noise, maybe I need to crank the volume up a bit! I've got her on my husbands side too as he doesn't register her noises. I thought I'd want her next to me to check she's alive but she is so loud I know she's fine so that's one positive at least!!
