Recommendations for taking 8 week told swimming

My little girl has had her first lot of jabs and I would like to take her swimming. My health visitor said I could take her before the jabs, but me personally just wanted to wait that first lot of them.

But as a first time mum I'm a bit unsure on the correct stuff I need for the baby. Can she wear just a normal costume or do I buy her a little wet suit? Also stumped on what rubber ring to get her as I've googled and not a lot come up for her age and would like the correct one

Wouldn't bother with a rubber ring. You'll be holding her the whole time and it's a bit little to be in an inflatable.

I'd suggest a long-sleeved/legged Happy Nappy type wetsuit with a reusable or disposable swim nappy underneath. They get cold very quickly when they are that small.

Also you'll be in for about 15 mins max at that age!

my LO has been swimming since she was 7 weeks.
Firstly, don’t buy a ring for this age - she will just want you to hold her for weeks & maybe months eventually (around 1) you can get suits with floats built in that you can gradually take out as they get more confident.

Mine wore disposable swim nappy, then some JoJoMaman swim bottoms & then on the top one of their neoprene wraps to keep her warm. Although we swam in a well heated pool she needed that for a long time & I also made it easier to keep hold of her.

the swim bottoms were much easier to take off a little one than a swimming costume!

mine is now much older & confident swimming just using a noodle to her her stay afloat

enjoy 😊

Swim nappy (disposable or reusable) with a Happy Nappy over the top to catch runny poos.

No need for a costume but a neoprene wrap / wetsuit thing will keep her warm and give you something to grip (wet babies are slippery Smile).

You don't need a rubber swim ring. At that age, she'll get cold very quickly so hold her so that she's in the water beneath her shoulders all the time. 15-20 minutes will be long enough unless it's a particularly warm pool (hydrotherapy type temperatures).

Happy nappy wetsuit and a swim nappy underneath, so double nappy.

A disposable swim nappy and happy nappy wetsuit/wrap. The wrap is easy to get on/off & keeps them warm enough. Look for a warm kids pool if you can, a normal 25m municipal pool will be too cold.

Take a big bath towel to wrap round both of you afterwards.

You can get neoprene changing mats but I've always just used the drop down changing tables with a towel on.

Swim nappies do not soak up wee so will not do for the trip home!!.. also don't think think too hard about all the baby wee that must be in the pool 🥴

Enjoy!

Double nappy, top 1 being a neoprene one, some sort of swimsuit over top to keep her warm, could do a wrap instead. Don't both with ring just hold her.

First couple of sessions you probably won't be in there more than 10mins as baby will get cold.

Towel and milk for as soon as you get out

My local place we are going has a baby session on a Saturday, so I'm presuming they will adjust temp for babies? I might ring and ask. She loves the bath, so hoping swimming is the same as I want her to be confident

Look on your pools website to see if they have a set baby time, you could take her any time but mine has set sessions where they make the pool warmer. You won't need a ring, just hold her in your arms, she'll feel safer and will get some of your body warmth.

From about 6 months we just used a swim nappy under a normal costume, but when she was tiny she had one made of wetsuit material like this

She's 8 weeks old, she's not going to be confident or otherwise, she's just going to be in your arms but in the water instead of not 😄

Usually you need a swim nappy and neoprene nappy or suit. Definitely don't need a ring, you'll be holding her the whole time. Make sure you wear clothes that are easy for you to get back on quickly afterwards.
