Well I nevfer know what to write, I hardly ever add to a conversation as I always worry about getting the words wrong.

Owt on telly?

teasle · 14/01/2008 22:00

I've been out for the evening and have just got in...so obviously my dp has decided its time for him to go to bed. Do you think he waited up especially to inform me of this before he sloped off upstairs to leave me sat downstairs by myself?

Hows it going juggling the course with childcare?

middy · 14/01/2008 22:13

Going ok, got easy week this week so no complaints. Watch this space though got jam packed weeks leading up to next placement so dp had better pull finger out with housework hes been slacking past few weeks can't cope with exams and home life. The cheek , has dp lost the art of convo, good job you've got MN Watching mock the week on dave at mo

Think I've given your thread the kiss of death. Start another one saying 'please someone else talk to me because I've just got this one poster ' Everyone must know I smell and thats why you aren't getting any other replies. In fact, that is the REAL reason I never post- thread death...

Enjoy 'mock the week', I shall now take leave of your thread and hope it flourishes in my absence

candypandy · 14/01/2008 22:41

Middy you are working too hard on your essays.
see you again somewhere on mn

3andnomore · 15/01/2008 00:17

Hi middy, hope your essay writing is going well. I have just been moaning about the essay that I have written more or less all of today....it's not quite finished...but well, nearly there...!

fairylights · 15/01/2008 00:21

hi middy, i am a relative newbie (to this bit of MN at least!) too, doing a law conversion course whilst also looking after my ds (14 mo), Sitting here trying to prepare a seminar on contract law, its as dull as it sounds..
am only in my first year so just getting my head around juggling everything and finding it hard but my dh is v supportive. Have to hand in an essay a week so never get any essay let up!!
Looking forward to being study buddies along the way..

3andnomore · 15/01/2008 00:26

An essay a week....gulp....is that kind of normal? I am only doing an academic study skills course at the moment, so, it's not like being at University or anything...but am now wondering if in OT it will be similar with an essay a week, etc....

fairylights · 15/01/2008 00:27

don't worry, i think my course is a bit exceptional on the essay front - we are bascially cramming a law degree into 2 years (part time??!) so there is a LOT to get through..the worst part is that it is still assessed 70% by exam!!

3andnomore · 15/01/2008 00:33

that sounds really stressful.

Well, teh course I am applying for will be a full time OT course...so, the balance of hard work with some lovely hands on artsy stuff will probablly be very different ( she hopes, lol)

middy · 15/01/2008 12:54

Thanks everyone. Fairy lights that does sound really excessive, don't think I complain further on the essay front, poor you!!
3andnomore are you going to do occupational therapy after your course? If so we have to work with other professions including OT. Don't worry too much about the work load I've spoken to a few and its now where near the essay amount as fairylights, like me you get placements so a lot is practical based.
Look forward to chatting with you more and no doubt moaning he

fairylights · 15/01/2008 14:06

wish i could do some practical placements instead of essays, would at least be interesting and engaging! Good luck on your courses..

3andnomore · 15/01/2008 15:33

middy, yes I want to become an OT....returning into Nursing does not appeal to me whatsoever, lol! And whilst I know that I would find midwifery very interesting, I don't think it would suit me...and that shift work, etc...is somehting that really would mess me about anyway.

Firefly...I don't think I could ever study anything that is purely theoretical....and must admit, I doubt I would be intelligent enough to do law...or well...I htink I lack the kind of intelligence that is necessary for law...if you know what I mean.

Well, I was ready to celebrate, as I had my essay finsihed, or so I thought, and then I called my tuor to ask about somehting and now I think I have attacked it wrong and I could just cry now, I am so frustrated now

middy · 15/01/2008 18:00

argh I hate it when that happens I bet the title was really broad as well. Hope you don't have to re write it and can tweak it a bit.

OP posts:
3andnomore · 15/01/2008 21:16

It isn't, the title is: How important are communication skills in modern nursing?
(2000 words essay)

The reason I called the tutor was, because I felt the paragraphs were quite long and I wanted to know if I could sub paragraph them without having to state every little bit in the Intro, but keeping that broader.
The way I attacked it was by first defining verbal communication , going into what can affect it and the impact of it, I did the same with non-verbal communication, using leMay differentiation as a model and again clarifying what and how it can be affected.
But leMay categorizes them into 9 differernt components. And my tutor felt that this may mean the quality of analyses, etc...will suffer (this was a very long paragraph (whereas I kept the verbal one shorter).

My next paragraph went into a study that examined different ways nurses communicated and also outlining the effects parent-centred communication has compared to a task-centred aproach to communication( which means lack of communication). (This is again a very long paragraph at this time.)

My final paragraph (of the body of teh essay) went into examining the importance of communication on a professional/multi-professional level.

My conclusion then was, that good communication skills are very important to modern nursing, due to the impact on patient care and quality of care, etc....

Other then those long paragraphs, I really felt that I had gotten it right, despite looking at such a variety of issues.
My tutor said, that it all sounds to descriptive, but I did give lots of examples, and "miniconclusions" to pretty much every issue, sigh...

In a way I am tempted to keep the basics as they are, but just rewriting it all, to section it up more, to create smaller paragraphs...because I really find it all so important, sigh....

3andnomore · 15/01/2008 21:17

sorry for the long ramblings there...but sometimes writing things down, etc...clarifies things in your head...

3andnomore · 16/01/2008 16:11

Rambling on to myself here, eh...anywya...I am well chuffed, got an offer of a place for the course I applied for...yeah....

fairylights · 16/01/2008 19:58

well done 3andnomore! clever you

3andnomore · 16/01/2008 21:06

not sure about tthe clever part, lol....

middy · 17/01/2008 07:53

Well done you getting on your course.
I had a horrible video assessment yesterday. We were scenario and we had to act it out as if it was real. I think we're being assessed on communication skills which is hard considering it was a fake situation. Will be watching the video today ( more like cringing behind a cushion)to try and reflect on it and suggest what I could have done better (that shouldn't be hard!).
Still need to finish the essay that I was talking about earlier in the week as well...oh the joys

OP posts:
3andnomore · 17/01/2008 12:58

yikes video assesment...shudder...that sounds nightmarish

middy · 18/01/2008 19:41

Well I've watched the video twice and can't believe how broad an accent I have on it. Its definitely cringe worthy, but quite good I think.
Only 120 words left until I meet my minimum word limit for essay yippee!!!
Start my next placement on 25th Feb, can't believe I'm only 5 weeks a way from potentially
delivering my first baby... scary.
