Do you give calpol for a fever ?

My child has a fever of 40 but no other symptoms just laying around flushed cheeks no energy but drinking lots. I’ve given calpol and got it down to 38.5 but I saw online not to always medicate with a fever ? Is this true? I just thought if it got too high they can have febrile convulsions ?

For 40, I probably would. A lower fever where they seemed fine, maybe not.

But I'm not a dr, that's just what I sort of feel is right..

I wouldn't say that just lying around with no energy was the same as "no other symptoms" though.

Also not a doctor but I give calpol or calpol nurofen for a fever for my 4 and 2 year old particularly st night to help them to sleep. I tend to sleep in the same room as them too to keep and eye on them. 111 would advise you

Laying around with no energy is a symptom. They must feel awful so I would give medication to bring temp down so they feel better. My toddler ended up in A and E with rapid breathing cause by a spike in temp so I would generally medicate.

I would say laying around with flushed cheeks and no energy plus a fever that high are a few symptoms!

I would give calpol and also be considering 111 if it didn't get better within the day and I couldn't figure out the reason.

I go on how they are.

a fever is there for a purpose- to raise the body to a temperature where bacteria and viruses can’t survive or reproduce.

if you bring the fever down it will be harder to fight the bug off

so I only medicate if they are feeling really miserable after supportive measures. Usually also before bed as I think sleep is equally important so if they are more comfortable they will sleep better.

it’s a judgement call really. Although over 39.5 they’re usually pretty miserable so normally I would then. Although one of mine wouldn’t take calpol as a child so I just used to have to leave them to it.

Sorry if I sounded silly I meant no other obvious symptoms of what could be wrong as in -rash ,ear pulling - bad cough, I know he must be feeling crap. Thanks everyone il keep a close eye on him today.

I give them Calpol if they look miserable with the fever. If they're acting normal, I wait but check often as the fever can go up quickly and suddenly in small kids.

Thank you vomiting has started now so he can’t keep calpol down anyway 😭
