Don’t know where to turn for what’s best for DS

DS was born @ 33+5 weighing 4lb4oz. He is now 10 weeks and 8lb1oz

He was sent home on SMA prem milk. He was quite uncomfortable, he would never not be whinging/crying if he wasn’t asleep or feeding: and HV advised 2 weeks ago to try nutramigen as she suspects CMPA. GP didn’t even ask for symptoms, just went off HV say so for milk.

Started nutramigen, he seeemed much happier. We actually had a baby who would engage with us and seemed so much more content. He would go out in the pram Happy as anything. He would be able to be lied on his back without rolling around bringing his knees to his chest.

DS is weighed weekly by the SCBU outreach team due to being prem. last week he lost 100gram. This week he’s gained only 50grams. He has gone from about 20oz a day to 27oz a day… but only gained such a tiny amount.

The SCBU outreach team have said that they wouldn’t of recommended nutramigen as it’s not for premature babies, surely HV and/or GP should know this???

We have been referred to dietician and this can take weeks to be seen, so the only advice we’ve been given is to go to half nutramigen and half SMA milk… to help him gain weight. However if he does have CMPA, surely having half bottles of the SMA milk will bring the symptoms back… therefore may we as well just give all bottles the old SMA milk to bring his weight up while we wait for dietician. Just accepting the fact he’s uncomfortable.

I feel lost, don’t know what to do… support is limited. Obviously NHS is very overwhelmed so waiting for a referral will take weeks. Should we go private?

I just want a happy baby who is gaining weight.

Bump for you.

I'd push for a dietician appointment

I don't have any advice, but I'd say with a preemie I'd be very wary of any advice given by HVs. They often don't know their arse from their elbows in terms of full term babies, let alone premature babies.

I would be very wary of HV and GP advice for a prem baby.

Having said that, my eldest was 4lbs at birth and didn’t hit 8lbs until she was around 20 weeks old.

Nobody ever had an issue with it, but she was gaining every week, even if it was only a small amount.

My youngest had CMPA and if I’d changed her back to normal formula, all Hell would have broken loose in her.
