Feeling trapped w/ 10week old

My DS is 10 weeks old. Every bottle he has, when first burped he projectile vomits up milk. The milk doesn’t appear to have even been digested, comes out as it went in. And I mean forcefully vomits. Sometimes I think it could hit the other side of the room.

We are treated for reflux with gaviscon, and it helps all other symptoms except this projectile vomit.

It happens every single feed after the first burping, doesn’t matter if he’s had 1oz, or 3 oz’s…. He will projectile vomit… then carry on and finish the bottle without any more vomit.

The thing is, is this makes me not want to feed in public… as imagine being in a restaurant and him projectile vomiting everywhere. The amount of family members/friends who’ve commented on it is a lot… “wow I’ve never known a baby do that” type of comments.

Things I’ve tried:

  1. burp more often - still happens
  2. Burp less often - still happens
  3. Feed sitting up - still happens
  4. Stop feeding, wait for 3/4 minutes before burping - still happens, sometimes he’ll bring it up before I even burp him.
  5. Give gaviscon in bottle and via a syringe during a feed - both ways still happens.

Surely there is SOMETHING I can do to stop this. I’m desperate to go out more, I’m out most days but find myself coming home just to feed him.

Someone tell me they’ve been through this, when did it resolve? Or how did you resolve it…. Just want to feel confident feeding DS in public!

I would ask to be referred to GP or hospital to be tested for cows milk allergy as soon as possible

That sounds so worrying! I’m sorry, I don’t have any advice as I haven’t experienced this. I’m just posting to ask whether your baby has been checked for pyloric stenosis. My HV mentioned it to me when I asked about my baby being really sick once or twice. It stuck in my head as she said this is projectile vomiting after every feed. I really hope it resolves soon it sounds really tough.

I think there are 2 separate issues here. 1) the vomiting, 2) feeling confident going out.

The vomiting is definitely worth getting to the bottom of… and apologies, no tips, I haven’t known a baby to do that either! 😬

re: going out, I wouldn’t worry too much about what people think. My dad told me roundabout when my first DC was 10 weeks old and I was worried about my DD’s crying bothering people at a family-friendly restaurant, that a baby’s crying always sounds louder to its mother. I think there’s some actual truth to that! But I’ve taken it to more broadly mean that as parents we’ll tend to be hyper-attuned to what our kids are doing, whereas the people around us are just getting on with their lives and are unlikely to take any notice.

For what it’s worth, if I DID notice you out with your baby during feeding time, I’d probably think “Awwww cute baby. Gosh, that’s some force behind that burp. Glad I’m not the one who has to clean that mess up. … awwwww cute baby.”

I had this and switched to goats milk. She later tested for cows milk allergy and I was right. It was a bot pf a google tp find a milk that had absolutely no cows milk in it, lots of baby formula has some in it. I use kabrita (but Im not in the uk so don't know if you can get it there).

Inthesky42 · 10/06/2022 06:44

My baby can't tolerate cows milk formula but she can tolerate goats milk formula (nannycare do a stage 1 milk). She shows no other signs of cows milk allergy other than vomiting. Might be worth a try.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/06/2022 06:50

Sounds like a cows milk allergy to me if that severe and constant

Truthseeker456 · 10/06/2022 06:54

Are you using cold sterilisation, if so this could be the cause.

TulipsGarden · 10/06/2022 07:03

Is he reasonably happy the rest of the time? It sounds like pyloric stenosis to me, but you need to get him checked with the GP. Could be CMPA but I'd expect him to be be very unsettled as well.

AbDaRob · 10/06/2022 10:43

2 weeks ago he was diagnosed with CMPA. So have been on new milk, he did have other symptoms as the sickness - but these have gone thanks to the new milk.

the only reason I may doubt him having pyloric stenosis is that it only happens once per feed…. Sometimes (maybe one feed a day) it won’t happen at all. If it was pyloric stenosis would it happen more? I’ve also aimed it for a bowl as was concerned it was a lot, but only ever maximum 5ml!!
However I will speak to HV about this!

DS would often projectile vomit after feeds. He was BF. Otherwise happy. Latch not perfect and fast flow. It resolved.
And we went out, even if he pulled off spluttering when milk let down and literally sprayed. So with a boob out.
