If your child starts reception in September will they be doing breakfast/ after school clubs & how many days per week?

Will you be using holiday camps?

Just trying to work out what’s normal as everyone round here seems to be available f0r 3pm pick ups…..

My DC1 started reception last September and he's been going to ASC 2 days a week. We don't need breakfast club.

Holiday clubs are harder tbh because he's still quite young and he's anxious about unfamiliar people and environments. So it's taken me a while to find some decent options to try over the summer holidays and I'm trying to coordinate with his friend so they can go together.

See if there are holiday clubs run at the school itself as they'd be more likely to have at least one friend, then.

Not starting this year but mine have always done wraparound and holiday clubs.

My son starts this September and will be at asc 4 days a week until 530.

Not quite what you’re asking but my son is in Reception now - he’s been in ASC every day until 4pm since September, and we’ve just extended him to 5.30 on three of the days - he loves it! I’d say the first term go a bit easy if you can but don’t beat yourself up if you need it for work.

mummabubs · 09/06/2022 21:44

We will need after school club 3 days a week as our families both live 200 miles away and I work part time. I also feel like not many others need this but this is almost always as they have grandparents providing free childcare. Unfortunately I can't change my work hours enough to be able to get home for 3pm as if I stretched work over 4/5 days then we'd need to pay for extra nursery days for our younger child and it wouldn't pay for me to return to work at all.

RIPWalter · 09/06/2022 21:51

DD will go the breakfast club (8am) most days, not because she needs to but because she wants to and is up at 6am most days anyway, also it's only a £1 a day.

There is currently no after-school club, there have been rumours of one starting. At the moment parents/grandparents/other parents providing childcare etc are there at 3pm as they have no choice. Some of the kids (3 out of 8) in DD nursery class have left to go to a different school with proper wrap around, which is a shame.

JazzyBBG · 10/06/2022 09:22

@RIPWalter £1 a day breakfast club? Wow! Ours is £6!

DS is just coming to the end of reception. I leave for work before school drop off on 2-4 days a week (complicated Self employed pattern) but DH drops him off on his way to work. He's in after school club for the days I am working and is mostly very happy although was initially very very tired every day. They get to know older children from other classes, get snacks and chance to play/ craft/ watch a movie together. Plenty of children are in every day. It exists for a reason

Harrysmummy246 · 10/06/2022 11:48

So far though, he hasn't done any of the holiday clubs as they only ever seem to announce them after I've arranged my parents to do childcare on my workdays and it's sports focussed which doesn't quite seem to be DS thing and less flexibility on pick up time which wouldn't help.

I'm slightly dreading the summer holidays though

Yodaisawally · 10/06/2022 11:50

Mine are older now but in reception, they did two days ASC and BC, mum and mil did one day a week and WFH on on day with the agreement that I could pick up (long before covid!).

Thankfully DH is a teacher so holidays weren't a problem but did mean he couldn't cover anything in term time.

The worst bit about reception was the staggered starts with half days.

trilbydoll · 10/06/2022 11:50

My two did ASC 2 days per week from the first week of school.

Holiday clubs - when it was only dd1 because dd2 was still in nursery I asked grandparents more than I do now, and I tried to coordinate with other parents so she had someone she knew there. Now both dc are old enough for clubs they are happier to go together.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 10/06/2022 11:50

We don’t use wraparound but just double check the rules. DS’ school didn’t allow reception children to use it until after Christmas.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 10/06/2022 11:51

We aren't starting yet but when we do will be will using wrap around care. I work three days a week and will need wrap around then. He current does 7.45-5.30 at nursery. Will need similar at school

MobLife · 10/06/2022 12:02

Few days per week will use the wraparound morning and afternoon. DC is at nursery so the days will still be shorter than a nursery day! DC will be with their sibling aswell so I'm not too worried about it

QforCucumber · 10/06/2022 12:03

DS1 is in Yr 1 - he does 4 days with an after school childminder until 5:30, I pick him up fidays. He has done this since starting, Ds2 will start School nursery Next year and also be collected by her the same 4 days

FruitToast · 10/06/2022 12:05

He'll do 8-5:15ish everyday at school (breakfast club and after-school) the same as his elder sister. He'll actually be in school less time than nursery.

pitterpatterrain · 10/06/2022 12:06

DD2 has wrap around every day of the week, 2 days CM, 3 days school clubs all until 6pm

Shorter days than when my DC used to be in nursery / childminder before school so wasn’t concerned
