10 week old, sleep and a dummy

Hi all,

FTM who needs some advice.

my 10 week old has a good bedtime routine which seems to work as she goes down without any fuss. 6/6:30 - bath, bottle, bed

However come 2am she wakes for her dummy and then I am up from 2am until 6am popping in her dummy. She’s been sleeping through the night and when she wakes it’s not because she’s hungry.

I’ve tried swaddling her, giving her dummies with a bigger teat & just rocking the next to me cot but nothing helps. She’s knocking the dummy out with her Arms when she wriggles about.

she sometimes goes down without a dummy but then wakes up wanting 1. As soon as it’s in she goes back to sleep until she knocks it out.

any help or advice would be appreciated as I’m so tired. I’m up more now that when she fed through the night

How do you know she isn’t hungry?
Honestly I would suggest just giving her milk. If she is waking constantly from 2am and a quick popping the dummy back in isn’t working then you should really assume hunger.
10 weeks is very very young to drop all night feeds from 6pm!

Just because she has slept through the night before without milk doesn’t mean she will always do it or that she doesn’t need milk. They go through growth spurts, developmental changes and generally their appetite is constantly fluctuating.

Even at 10 months I do a small dream feed at 10pm.

Agree with PP try some milk, a smaller feed and pop her back down.

Dummys are great, until they’re not. So like you I treated it as an exception not the rule.

from 12 weeks you can introduce a safe comforter. I recommend the Bunny bear from Jelly cats. Over time she’ll use it as a sleep crutch which has been our lifeline. I don’t recommend the comforters with a blanket as she can cover her face with it.

you could also introduce a dream feed 11, to help her sleep through. She’s still very young, so this is all very normal, and unusual for her to sleep through.

I agree with PP, I cant see how a 10 week old can go all night without a feed.

I agree with PP - that's a long stretch for a small baby to go without milk. DS used to have a later bedtime, a dream feed at 11/11.30pm and then would sleep for another 6-7 hours till morning. He stopped doing that at 5 months but I really appreciated those few months of great sleep!

@CantStartaFireWithoutaSpark that's incorrect, baby should have nothing in the cot with them until 12 months, not 12 weeks.

Adding to the voices who say it's very unusual for a 10 week old to do a full night's sleep with no need for feeds at all when waking. My DD had a stint of sleeping through aged about 6-8 weeks, but by that I mean she didn't wake at all. If your bubba is waking constantly in the early morning I'd say they're probably hungry. Maybe try offering them a feed when they first wake at 2am - if it was hunger then chances are they'll go back to sleep straight away and not wake up for a few more hours!

Mine also slept through at that age, but not every night! Honestly your go-to at 10 weeks should still be milk.
