4yo hasn’t urinated in 24 hours...Advice?

Hi
My 4 year old has a sickness bug, the last time he went for a wee was around 4pm yesterday (to my knowledge) I have been monitoring him since 5am this morning and he hasn’t attempted to urinate once. I have been getting him to drink as often as possible. He seems to keep things down for an hour or so and then vomits it up. I

i have taken him to the GP at 11.30 today, I explained that I’m very worried that he’s dehydrated and hasn’t urinated since yesterday, but she wasn’t worried at all. She checked his obs and says he seems fine overall just to wait it out and keep fluid intake up, which I have done.

He has perked up slightly today, he has slept most of the day, from about 1pm till 4pm. He is still sluggish and wants to lie down. I am giving him nufophen. He had a temp of 39 yesterday but today He has no temp.

What can I do, GP says he’s fine, should I still be concerned?

Go to a and e. He is probably dehydrated
good luck x

Thanks, even on the advice that he’s fine from the Gp? She says his heart rate etc is fine and just to keep giving him fluids. I have gave him as much as he will take...

I'd go to a&e or a walk in centre which deal with minor illnesses if there is one. I wouldn't be pumping him with any more neurofen if he hasn't wee'd . 🤞 he gets better soon OP 💐

Ok thank you, really? My Gp advised too give him nurophen & calpol too. I have been topping him up every 4-6 hours :( as advised.

Yes, I would

I saw an out of hours GP last night for the same thing for my 3yo. He had gone from 6pm to 3pm without weeing. He was fine when the GP checked him. I was told 1 wee in 16 hours is OK.

We rang 111 and got an out of hours appt. It was slow to get a call back from the nurse practitioner because they were busy but might be better today. At least we were waiting at home and not A&E.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 06/06/2022 16:44

Are his lips and tongue looking particularly dry? Honestly, I wouldn’t wait for dehydration to have an impact on heart rate before taking a small kid to be seen at A&E.

We’ve had our fair share of D&V bugs across our 3 DCs, and thankfully it’s never come to bringing them to hospital as they’ve always massively turned a corner after 18ish hours. 24 hours without a pee… I don’t think you’d be unreasonable to get a second opinion. Maybe start by calling NHS24, but if your instinct is telling you hospital, then go.

Ring 111 and you will be given an appointment with a doctor, more than likely at an urgent care centre.
I'd do that to get a second opinion.

I wouldn't be comfortable pumping him with neurofen if he hasn't wee'd. It's good you followed thier advise, but I won't just keep giving it without a second opinion. Oneday i took my dd to hospital for a viral wheeze and the doctor said to give her calpol and neurofen. He told me that it is not essential for me to give her nurofen if I don't want and that it is much stronger for kids than calpol. Cant remember if he said if was strong on their tummy or kidneys. I wouldn't have an issue giving it to them if he is wee'ing. But as his system is not quite doing what it is supposed to be doing (emptying bladder) I personally would hold off the nurofen until I get a second opinion from a&e or walk in centre. If they check him and still say its okay , then I will continue to give Neurofen only if he has a temp to bring down or is in pain.

I decided to ring 111 shortly after writing this post, then he had a wee! Wasn’t much though so decided to take him to A&E . I just thought that GP was most knowledgeable so took her advice, although ultimately had to trust my own judgement to take him to a&e as it is a very long time to go without urinating.

thanks for the advice, will update when possible

Good idea OP
Hope all is well

Turns out he was fine. Just a sickness bug. Glad for the reassurance never the less. Always trust your instincts no matter what
