Confused about reusable nappy systems

Sorry if this has been done to death, but I'm struggling. OK, at the mo I've got cotton bottoms which consist of outer wrap, inner nappy and flushable bio-liner. So far so simple. But I'd like to get some different types to see if any are more comfortable, but e.g. if I buy a nice looking tots bots wrap on ebay, what do I need to go with it? Some of them say you need a waterproof outer. Do I need an inner nappy bit with it or not? What are fleece liners? Any other types you'd recommend? Any other confusing combinations? Pls help

OK, I'll see if I can help you...

the outer waterproof bit should be called a wrap or cover- e.g.a Totsbots wrap will be made of either fleece or PUL (polyurethane laminate) and needs a nappy inside it. If you want to, you can line the nappy with a liner- flushable liners get chucked, fleece liners can be washed and re-used. the advantage of these is that wee passes through them into the nappy, and the skin is kept dry.

So, if the description includes "PUL" it is already waterproof.

Some nappies are "all-in-one", which means that the nappy, wrap and liner are sewn together, making them very easy to use, but more expensive and less versatile. they take quite a while to dry , too.

Some nappies are "pocket nappies" or "stuffables" (although that term has been trademarked by Nature Babies). This means that the wrap and liner are stictched together, and there isa pocket to insert an absorbent nappy.

I have to say I'm a blatant Totsbots fan, but you'll get a lot of other recommendations, too. Got to go, dinner on table.

HTH

I'm a totsbots fan too, but you'll need to go up a size or two in trousers! The rainbow ones are great - slimmer fitting & look v cute.

I find velcro fastening nappies get into a right old tangle in the machine, so I've been using the ones that work with nippas.

Having started with a free 'variety' hire pack from plushpants - & then inadvertently dyed them pink so had to keep them which means I have several different brands - I have to say I've found any old nappy works with any old wrap!

You can buy second-hand nappies here (click on view my classifieds) and here as well as on ebay. Tissy's description is spot on. Other popular brands include motherease one-size, Bumbles, and Ella's House hemp nappies. Tots wrap are nice and many people also go for Motherease Airflow wraps. Get a few and try them. They all hold really good resale value. HTH

With the Totsbots fleece ones do you need an outer waterproof? DD (14m) isn't a particularly heavy wetter at night - in fact she recently went 4 nights dry (12 hours plus!) to my amazement. I don't mind the cotton bottoms but would like to see if something is more comfortable for dd as she complains sometimes and they have left red marks sometimes. DH finds it tricky to put them on and reading your comments just now was keen on the all-in-one types, but I don't want to pay that much really. Thanks for the replies x

have a look at twinkleontheweb - it is explained fairly well there. Basically you need an waterproof wrap (unless you go for all-in-ones - but they usually are not so absorbant, ad leak proof). Then you put the nappy inside that (can be a folded terry, a pre-fold, or a shaped nappy), then a booster if you have a heavy wetter, and a liner if you like (can be flushable or fleece - fleece suit my lot's botties better and help to keep the nappy cleaner).

Personally I like motherease one-size, popolini one-size and tots bots, with fleece liners and motherease or popolini wraps.

You can pick up second hand one on ukparents.co.uk buy and sell nappy forum.

I'm a big Motherease fan. In 18 mos never had one single leak. I'd really suggest you get some advice from a Nappy Lady adviser who tailors advice according to your personal circumstances. She's at the website someone linked you to below. I agree that at 1st it all seems v. confusing, but it's not really once you see it all in action!
